Mangaluru: Students in FB photo suspended, committee to probe incident

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Updated

Mangaluru, Feb 23: In a fresh development, the students who were involved in the controversial photograph uploaded on Facebook, where a boy was seen lying on the laps of five girls in a classroom, have been suspended from the college.

They are students of final year BCA at Govinda Dasa College, Suratkal. However, Riyaz, who was only seen sitting in the photo on the extreme left, has not been suspended.

Moreover, a committee will probe the incident.

In a letter to the student welfare officer of Mangalore University to which the college is affiliated, principal Prof K Rajamohan Rao stated that in order to enquire into the matter, a committee was constituted comprising senior staff members of the college as well as its director of administration.

The students involved in the incident and their parents were called to the college on Monday February 23. The committee, after enquiring them, decided to suspend the students until further orders in the first instance, and refer the matter for further action to a separate committee comprising representatives of Mangalore University and the management, states the letter.

The principal has also requested the student welfare officer of the university to nominate a member of the university to be part of this committee.

The principal in his letter said that the photo's appearance in the social media has created a 'lot of emotional outbursts among students and members of the public'.

Speaking to daijiworld, the principal said that the five girls and the boy lying on their laps have been suspended, but not Riyaz. However, Riyaz has been asked to appear before the committee on February 26 to give his statement. "There have been demands to debar the students, but we cannot do it without an inquiry. Hence the committee will be formed and the issue brought to the notice of Mangalore University and the management," he said.

ABVP protest

Meanwhile, members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in the college campus demanding debarment of the students involved in the incident.

No classes were held during the morning as ABVP along with the college students protested. Students from an another college also joined the agitation.

The ABVP warned that the protest would be intensified if the demands were not met.

The principal then held a meeting in the presence of the police and informed the protestors that the college cannot debar the students without inquiry and that the decision to debar was in the hands of the university.

He said the students have already been suspended and further action would be taken by the Mangalore University after a probe by a committee. He added that a letter in this regard has already been sent to the university.

After assurance from the principal, the protest was withdrawn and classes resumed in the afternoon.

ACP Ravikumar and tahsildar also visited the college.

Mangaluru: FB photo case - 6 detained, police warn against social media misuse

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Updated: Feb 23

Mangaluru, Feb 23: Relating to the incident in which a BCA student named Riyaz was taken away in connection with a Facebook post in which his male classmate is seen lying on the laps of some girls, it is gathered that some of the persons who beat up Riyaz have been detained.

Police sources said that six youths have been detained in connection to the incident, but refused to divulge their names. They are being questioned and by evening clearer details may emerge, sources said.

Realizing the sensitive nature of this case, deputy commissioner of the city commissionerate (law and order), Santosh Babu, and Panambur assistant commissioner of police, Ravikumar, have been camping in Suratkal police station to guide detailed investigation into the incident.

Santosh Babu invited leaders of some organizations to the police station to hold discussions on the incident. He told them that he would be taking action against people indulging in making malicious posts in social media. He said that the act of spreading false information through these sites and creating wedge between different people is totally unjustifiable.

The DCP further said that he would be issuing strict instructions to all the police stations within his jurisdiction, seeking the police to discharge duties during night shifts without fail. He also wanted everyone moving at night to possess identity cards.

In the meanwhile, student organizations of a college here said they would be handing over a memorandum to the principal on Monday seeking detailed investigation and initiation of strict steps against the guilty.

Mangaluru: Boy's pic with girls on Facebook - Classmate kidnapped, thrashed

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Feb 22: A youth was allegedly kidnapped and attacked at Suratkal here on Sunday February 22, over a photo on Facebook where his classmate is seen lying on the laps of five girls. The photo, taken in a college classroom and uploaded on Facebook, has created a flutter, prompting police inquiry.

However, the youth who was attacked, identified as Riyaz, was not the one the lying on the girls'' laps, but his classmate. Nevertheless, Riyaz is seen in the photo sitting on the extreme left.

On Sunday at around 11 am, two of Riyaz''s friends, Ritesh and Vineeth came to his residence at Kana in Suratkal and said he should remove the photo which is also making rounds in WhatsApp. They said they wanted to resolve the issue and took him out.

As the three were coming out of the house, a car came there, and Riyaz was allegedly forced into the car, which then sped away. He was taken to Muddanna ground at Katipalla, where a group of around 15 persons were lying in wait. Riyaz was then thrashed and he was also allegedly made to remove his clothes and consume drinks.

The group of youths demanded to know the whereabouts of the boy who posed lying on the girls'' laps, but Riyaz said he did not know anything about him. The boy in the photograph has been identified as Mohammed Swali.

Sources said that another car came there and took Riyaz away. He was then thrown out of the car outside NIT-K.

Thereafter, Riyaz called up his father who was at that moment filing a missing complaint about his son in the police station. His father later admitted him in hospital.

The police are understood to have taken statements of Riyaz and further investigations are on. An attempt-to-murder case has been registered in Suratkal police station.

Riyaz and Swali are students of BCA.

We Indians are caught in the midst of rapid transition where 2 to 3 generations are fighting to impose their view and experience of life and religion on each other. The young generation is suffering because of this. I am sure after few years from now when we completely transform into a developed and understanding society, people will look back into these incidents and realize how naive we were. In today's situation even wishing a girl with a handshake will be misunderstood as sexual if the photo is on social media and the culture organizations would be running after them to beat them up.....yet it is surprising that these very conservative people when they immigrate to Western countries , quickly understand the value of individual freedom and become liberals in their thoughts and actions...partly because the law over there is very strict regarding anyone poking thier nose in others business ...

This is not the place I grew up. Who is anyone other than their parents to interfere in this matter at all? The world has moved on far ahead while Mangalore is stuck is behind. Even in a Muslim city like Dubai, the mosque shares a wall with the temple. Stop insulting the religion you belong to! This is not what religion teaches us!

It is disappointing to see such an overreaction to a photo.
I feel pity for those who believe college life is only about studies. What about friends, fun and learning to be part of a community?
What is ABVP's concern in all of this? Neither the girls or the boy have been harmed.
If morality is the issue, it is best taken up between the University and the parents of those involved. Why blow up such a trivial incident?
The levels of intolerance in our country is laughable. I wish have of the interest could be shown in punishing the perpetrators who beat Riyaz.
We are such a narrow-minded, hypocritical society. People should learn to mind their own business and find something better to do. Let college kids live in peace! Not destroy their futures.
Also, if you believe this is an isolated incident, then you really need a reality check. Times have changed. If you don't want to change, please don't. But don't enforce your archaic, outdated traditions on a generation that is more than capable of independent thoughts and decisions.
    Cheers.

I completely agree with Dr. W here. I am sorry Rudy, if you see any Indian movie, you will see more than this. I have studied in Mangalore and when we were students we did things like this. People abroad might laugh at us when you say that this is an issue in India. Come on mate! This is issue because now right wing activists want to poke their nose in everything. I know ABVP very well (Its not Atal Bihar Vaja Payee)since the friends belongs to different communities, they want to make an issue. Do you think students who are belongs to ABVP are saints? There is nothing wrong even publishing this pic in their own face-book and as per as I know this picture is taken with consent and the girls also know it is in Face-book. Remember that inn this whole incident it is OTHERS who had problems not the ones who are in picture. There OTHERS are the problem of current India.

    It is shocking.

All the kids are in sober mood. They have no dirty feelings in their mind. They did it openly. I wish, if my nephews and nieces had such healthy friendship between each other.

Very sorry to hear that they are harassed for such an innocent act.

Really, really painful. I have taken classes to kids of that age. In every classroom, there would be 5 to 10 such kids, who would be playful like that. What is wrong in that? They dont do anything wrong. I am sure, even the relatives (both girls and boys) who protest here, would act like that.... They are so innocent. See the smile in that guy's face.

It is shocking to see this type of response. I am sorry.

Now boys side will have their own revenge and will go on and on and will lead to civil war and division of country on communal line. I don't see any thing serious offence or indecency like our honorable ministers and respected MLSs watching blue film in the legislative house. Minister raping friends wife or minister kissing somebody's wife in public.

So, why didn't these bhangi's protest when minister rape his friends wife? When ministers watching blue film in legislative house" When minister kissing in public? When MLSs wife kidnapped and killed? Didn't they find anything indecency in those acts?

I am sure that no sane person will find anything wrong in the picture taken by youngsters, it is simply a fun moment - nothing beyond that. No Rape nor Consensual sex involved. It is only people with a "Jaundiced" view who have nothing better to do than to stir up communal hatred for political gain, who make a tamasha about this. These same creatures will have no qualms about visiting sex workers after eating a Kilo of beef and drowning it with cheap liquor and then give vent to their depraved pervert minds. If the girls who had the boy in their lap / their folks have no issues, please let the matter rest and life go on. People have better things to do. I am sad that enlightened readers on this forum give a communal flavor to every silly happening in this otherwise peaceful coastal town - once known for its intellectual and classy community, until the saffron brigade showed their colors ....

When i first saw this picture, i didnt even understand what was wrong with it. Only after reading the article did i see what everyone considered an issue!

So, to the people who say this in indecent.

The boy has only posed for a picture with a girls! He has not slept with them or done anything that is 'indecent'. The people who claim this to be indecent and against Indian culture should understand that the only other 'moral police' who consider this offensive are the taliban, ISIS and other terrorist organizations. After seeing the response of the locals to this incident, i am ashamed to say that I am from India.

In any other developed country, this incident would not even be considered as anything more than college students relaxing and having fun during breaks from studying.

There is nothing wrong with this incident and nothing at all illegal here. I hope one day the younger generation grows up and India will finally have better adults who have better work in life than to push their opinions on people they have no right to even talk about it.

and, no, if this was my sister in the picture, i wouldn't have cared at all. It is a picture of enjoyment between students. NOT indecency!

The Boys and the girls should be given a final warnings by the College. The students should go for studies in the college and not for any other purpose. And again School is a temple it should be respected and doing this act is truly shameful abnormal behaviour.People should respect other religions as they respect theirs and not try to create any dis harmony with other religions.
This instance would have not occurred if the so called kids would not have misbehaved with girls .So next time donot try this with any other community girls with wrong intentions.

I think suspension for a week is OK to improve discipline in college. But debarring students for this is just wrong. All of us have committed some mistakes in life, I hope they are given another chance. I think most of the young students do not know how to behave and are not taught basic manners. When I was in school/college we had value education teaching us what was accepted behavior and dressing for a formal environment. Those teachings help me to this day at work. The youth are misguided, they just need correction and discipline.

The main problem is with the advancement in technology unlike earlier days wherein any (mis)adventure on the part of the young bloods is immediately flashed around the world so these youngsters should exercise extreme caution while uploading such controversial pics, messages etc. on social media sites to stay insulated from unnecessary problems for them and the society at large!!

It would be a myth to say such mischievous activities were not occurring in times gone by but then the technology is playing spoilsport today!!

With the advent of micro cams and microphones it is very dangerous to go and stay even in a friend or relatives place as one never knows when a mischievous mind might have these devices activated for fun or to be used for other reasons!!

I have so many times read peoples comments blaming parents, teachers, Wardens, for whatever goes wrong with grown up children (students) sometimes even drug abuse. My point of view has always been not simply put the blame on parents and so on because what their children (not all) do behind the back is unknown.

The proof is in front of us.

One hand cannot clap. Where is fear of God, self-respect and morals of life? Gone....................so bad and sad.

Why to blame boy alone...He is enjoying the laps of these girls and the girls are enjoying the warmth of this boy...Both need to be punished/bashed and when you criticize you please criticize the action and not his religion...Do you agree..

    Dear All,

I am a girl who grew up in this city, decorated chirstmas tree in neighborhood, lit up entire buildings with Diyas during dewali and awaited for Eid for biriyani.
I am no Muslim, Hindu or christian

I am just a girl you grew up in a friendly city that is so hostile now that during a heavy rain

a boy (not of my religion) asked me to him somewhere, I refused.
Only because I was scared we would be beaten up by some goons.

Why is mangalore so unsafe? Unsafe for people who dont have and make friends without discrimination, unsafe for those who want to help,

mangaluru is not unsafe! we too have grown up on the same society! ... marriage is your personal choice! if you can convince your parents and your boyfriends family, you dont have to give a rat's a## about others opinion! ...if still they object and you want to get married, NO ONE can stop you! go approach the court, marriage registry office, police! they will give you enough protection!... Marriage is between only two individuals- never two religions! so you dont have to change the religion either! stick to what you practice and as obama says, you have article 25 to help you practice it!... and if you think, all mangaloreans should come to your marriage with dhol-tamasha then put the inivtiation right here on daiji on right hand corner!... the problem here is One sect imposes "we are the only way to reach god, we are the right method, we do as per our holybook says, what we do is the RIGHT way, and you are fools to pray to idols, and bla bla" conflict arises! holier than thou should be shunned!

(I apologise in advance for the really long post)
You see, this is a fine example of how messed up our community is.The original comment by the girl was about "meeting up with some guy" and the only thing that crossed your mind was marriage. Is that what you view of your fellow Indians?A piece of meat meant for marriage and later on copulating(having sex) to continue on your damned generation? Is that how low society deems the others around them to be?
If that's the case, then I pity the Indian society for even having the audacity of considering the very fact of your existence cause your comment was that pathetic.
The problem is,people talk about Indian culture like they actually have a PhD on the subject.According to the current mindset of the society, whatever they think is right.According to some fuc**@# up logic that they use, they deem it to be against Indian culture. That is the most idiotic thing I've noticed in my entire life. You do not decide what the Indian culture is.Your background does not decide whether you're an Indian or not.Your ideologies does not decide whether you're an Indian or not.Being an Indian means much more than that.
Being an Indian is to look after your fellow brothers and sisters.Being an Indian is to tolerate the views and actions of your fellow Indians.Being an Indian is to appreciate what a fine cultural history you belong to.Not beat someone up because you have taken a pic posing on the laps of a few girls.
The fact that this has made the news and not the suffering of countless Indians who suffer from poverty and of the women who suffer from domestic violence and what not breaks my heart to pieces. It saddens me to see so many people condemning a pic,but the same people wouldn't bat an eye if it was a case of public indecency or violence against women cause it has been increasingly common these days.I feel sad to live in a time where the minds of people are so constricted that posing for a pic makes the news but most violent crimes do not.

If it was in a park or party nobody would have bothered. it's in college , class room these youngsters ending up doing all these... sleeping on girls laps and girls letting them to do that... come on. there is a discipline for everything. they are not sent to college for doing those things. we are scared because our kids will be seeing these and follow same path. please help us in stopping all these stupid stuffs and route youth back on right track, or else they will be lost on their own world and then they may question all of us as
'why didn't you stop us and showed right direction"... so lets wake up please...

Who is wrong here? is the picture , Is the boy ? are the girls?
Or the boy who uploaded on the social media? I dont understand what is wrong. They boy would not have laid on the girls lap if they objected. May be they all are friends who wanted little fun? I think strict action should be taken with the persons who assaulted these kids. if something was wrong then file a complain, or bring it to the attention of school authorities. In India everyone has right to trash anyone, this is a shame.

I think when kids study in a college or school they hardly bother about a particular community or religion. They may be just friends, may be it was wrong to click a picture in the class room. Most ideal way would have been to advise them or bring it to the attention of their teachers and parents to discipline them. They have the ultimate responsibility. Trashing them will not serve purpose.Within the school all are equal/ no rich/ no poor/ no religion/ no cast or creed. Thats why the uniform!

How nice! Still very strongly supporting your religion and bring communal. Get a life . I'm sure this boy didn't for a moment think about the girls' religion when he decided to lie on them. Neither did the girls think of the boy's religion when he was lying on them. However just because he happened to be a Muslim, some smart a.. decided to make it an issue. To answer your question if a Hindu guy lay on girls of other religion, then nothing would have happened! The ruling party has cultivated some retards in our country and that is unfortunately the fate and misfortune of our country and it's people.

Guys agreed the boy and girls are equally involved. But what is the motive of this man uploading he pic in FB. Was it not deliberate effort done to harm the reputation of the girls involved. Would he behaved the same way if his sisters or his own religious folks were found in a similar pose. These guys take exception even when other men sit beside them in bus. And here see what they do. These men want others to grow up and be broadminded. When it comes to them they want to be very orthodox. So who are they preaching. I agree with what Vellano has said. The man speaks sense yaar.

At least a few people have asked what's wrong with the picture and I too ask the same thing.

If they were doing something illegal, the girls would have hidden their face from the camera. These students have come to a point where they can clearly differentiate between friendship and illegal skin activity. By the way, didn't we do these things in our college days ? Didn't we go to picnics and freely mingle with friends and take pictures. This is part of growing up.

Creating a big issue on a simple pic is unnecessary. In college life many thing happens. It is known to every one, every parents. Although they send their children to college. It is all part of our life. No special exposure is required for that. As per my view, the above pic is far better than Sunny Leone pic. We give more respect to a porn actress like Sunny leone to give expose in any ad, but at the same time we oppose friendly pose with other communal boy or girl. What is shame, what is not shame.... totally we leave not for us, but for public it says. Hidden many things happen, but it should not be published... what a shame less mentality of now a days people....

Both Girls & Boys are equally involved in this incident. Punish those who are indulged in this act, not the one who is just seen in that pic. Guy behind those girls is enjoying with a smile on his face giving pose to the pic.
I had got disturbing video of thrashing that guy via whatsapp, it was a forward, & also news that one among those girls committed suicide depressed after the incident, don't know how far it is true.
Simple way to get rid of these type of incident is frequent visit of parents to college to know what their ward is doing in college & how is his/her performance. Keep track on their movement. Don't let your ward to stay out after college for long time. Ask them to be home on time. All these may be annoying to the students initially but results will be sweet.
Parents wants their children to be safe round the clock, no matter they are in home or out.
Hope to see Mangalore follow religion of "Humanity" in the near future than differentiating as "Hindu", "Muslim" or "Christian".

College they are sent to study and opt for a good carrier. not for boys to sleep on laps of their class mate girls nor for girls to pull a boy on their laps. Girls if you want this type of jolly things then learn to develop courage to live with tarnished image. 5. Before defending this incident, and preaching others just try to put some light into your own mind and wash it out these double standard thinking's!

What's wrong in the picture? The girls and boys are talking openly means they are straight forward and moreover it is their age to talk, have some fun like talking, fighting and bunking the class too during the college days. If there was any problem with the picture they could have approach the police.

Not to the boys but th girls are equally responsible for this how they allowed him to sleep and take a pic. and while uploading on social media y their faces hidden. Bring them out and punish them. why to beat guys in this matter. Both boys and girls are equally responsible for this issue and these dirty creatures of Political chelas takes advantage of it and beat them. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL " BUDDIVANTHARA JILLE" DISTRICT OF INTELLIGENT PEOPLE.For me its not dist of intelligent its dist of morons and stupid people. Its like pour water on stone and it never reacts. Just like the same, wake up people learn good things from Bombay, Delhi,Bangalore. They don't have communism which is worst virus to the fast growth of any city. If not now then when? What is the use of having large institutions or large it campus? It seems like we are in Bihar or in Odisha. sometimes worst then them because we dont care what happens in our society. We dont put effort to stop communal riots infact we support them more. So try to live in harmony and dont act like ZOMBIES. I can say now some religious activist have become more worse than ISIS only thing that they dont have guns or else they have made manglaore as Syria or Lybia or Iran. Its a shame to all mangaloreans a big shame. You people treat Cow as ur GOMATHA and u r ready to kill or rape ur MATHA or ready to kill ur ANNADATHA (Father). Last to say no one has right to kill anybody because no one has right to give birth to anybody except God. So atleast for God sake stop this non sense and live in harmony because u never hw will you die.

These are just immature kids turning adults. Why are people here saying punish the girls and punish the boys? Every household has growing kids and at some point of time they too will do some or the other blunder when they are immature. But for this punishment is not the option. In this case the principal and the parents should talk to the children and correct them so that they realise how badly things have turned now so that they won't repeat the mistakes. And if anybody else has any issues with the photo they can file an FIR. Moral policing is just as anti-social as any other crime.

First of all we must understand that , if they did something wrong there is legal system to resolve the issue. Who authorized these people to punish them. There is a principal in the college who can handle this.
On the other hand , what if these boys and girls are like brothers and sisters? There is no other value for a girl other than projecting as a sexual object?
If they had bad intentions will they post the pic in social media..? There are other kids too?
By doing all these we are dividing human relations which indirectly creates enmity between kids . They may not be matured enough to know the seriousness..
