Mangalore/Udupi, Sep 8: The Feast of Nativity of Our Lady or ’Monthi Fest’ was celebrated with much devotion and joy, with hundreds of children and adults showering flowers on the statue of the Nativity of Mother Mary in Catholic churches around the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and around.

St Sebastian Church, Bendur

The celebrations to mark the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary began at various churches at 7 am. There were hymns and prayers at the grotto of Mother Mary, and a procession accompanied by a musical band, while children showered flowers all over.

This is the biggest festival for parishes across Karnataka coast, particularly the twin-districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The people use this occasion to salute the kindness of the divine powers and earn their kindness. This is also the festival in which they thankfully acknowledge the kindness of Mother Nature and mother earth for the bounteous crops.

Processions are held, normally by taking a statue of Baby Mary along. People carry baskets of flowers and ears of paddy in their hands while walking in the processions, which start from the church, pass through decorated streets, and reach the church premises again. The newly harvested rice stalks and sugarcanes, duly blessed by the priests, are then taken home by the people. The grains are crushed at home, added to milk, and served to the family members.

Rains could not dampen the spirit of festivity among thousands of devotees who attended the mass and processions.

After the Feast Mass, people returned home with the blessed new paddy, which will be placed at a decorated altar and later mixed with sweet dishes and eaten with a thanksgiving to the Lord.

A Happy Feast to all. During this festive week let us retrospect the less fortunate ones especially those who have put an appeal on Daijiworld Homepage. I have called few of them and they are disappointed that help is not reaching them. When we are blessed with good health and prosperity. We should also, help the less fortunate ones. This is God's way of testing us. even a small amount of help from all mangaloreans can meet the befeciaries aid. Church should announce after mass so that people can come forward and help with pay back concept where after the need is fulfilled, the beneficiaries can repay and the cycle can continue. Once again A Happy Virgin Mary Feast to all.

Essentially the key part of the celebration and preparation is the celebration of the harvest itself. In India the ancient custom of celebrationg the harvest is combined with some religious purpose.Christians may celebrate the harvest along with Mary's birthday and Hindus may combine it with Ganesh Chathurthy. In Kerala all communities celebrate Onam on the same day though Hindus may combine it with the remeberance of Mahabali. In any case it is great to see the new harvest.
