Windrow compost for wet waste – Udupi municipality’s new, successful attempt

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Aug 10: The city municipality here is going to construct a windrow compost unit in order to convert wet garbage into manure in order to deal with tons of wet waste produced by vegetables, fish and meat.

More than 35 tonnes of wet waste is generated every day from the 35 wards of the municipality. In the beginning stages the unit has produced 150 tonne compost on experimental basis and got good response from farmers. The city municipality intends to produce this on a large scale in future.

Hundreds of poultry farms exist in the 35 wards of the city municipality which generate around 2500 kg of chicken waste every day. This is used in windrow compost as 10% mix.

The compost unit is built near Alevoor on a 93 square feet area. Wet waste is dumped and separated into four to five heaps. This waste is mixed once a week. This turns into compost in 40 to 45 days. This manure is excellent for horticultural crops.

Now, the manure is prepared in a process that is not very refined. In future machines will be used so that even a single piece of plastic does not enter the manure. Later it will be powdered into small sizes with the use of machines.

The Bengaluru horticulture department has sent the sample of experimental windrow compost to the bio centre and it is analyzed by the experts. Senior director of plant nutrition gave a report that it is suitable for horticultural crops.

Civic discipline reduces waste drastically... We can not call recyclable waste as waste... It is a type of resource instead... Basic human behavior must change for the better... I have seen a colleague from Singapore who used to carry waste tissue in his pocket to dispose in a far away bin... We mostly throw it wherever space is available... Also we see people while eating... They take more than they can eat and litter the waste all around their plates and throw under the tables too... Only when we improve we can expect Bharat to be Swachh....
