Doha, Jun 21: In its endeavour to serve the community in Qatar and to provide an avenue to improve one's talents, Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar successfully conducted a workshop on 'Konkani Modern Drama Theatre ' on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Prestige Restaurant Hall.

Lancy Pinto Nayak, an energetic gentleman and a distinguished member of elite Konkani artists and dramatists, who has won numerous awards and prizes in Konkani plays and his literary work and who also has conducted similar seminars in other Gulf countries, was specially flown in from Kuwait to conduct a most practical workshop on the nuts and bolts of organizing a modern Konkani drama.

Evening began with a welcome note from the General Secretary Oliver Pereira. President Alwyn D'Souza introduced  Lancy Pinto Nayak and  lauded his selfless and yeoman’s service to our mother tongue and Konkani dramatic arts and literature.

The genuine approach and humble nature of Lancy Pinto Nayak struck a cord with the participants. His passion for popularizing the heritage of our ancestors’ and their love for Konkani drama, a worthy cause, was well received. It was the unique energy enhancing exercises and games implemented in the workshop made the participants boost their confidence to involve themselves whole heartedly.  A sense of belonging to our culture and willingness to do more for the cause was building up every moment, as the participants watched him in action.

A workshop with a difference made the participants wait on their toes for the next move. An insight of an actor gave a world of experience to the participants. An actor's emotions, control, confidence and fitting oneself in to a character was narrated through the examples of various great actors of Konkani theatre. Contributions of legendary directors, script writers and others involved in Konkani plays were recounted. It was a life time experience to listen to the reactions and emotions involved in a play, straight from none other than our own legendry actor, director, writer and a lover of Konkani, Eddie Sequer, who was present during the workshop as the Guest of Honour.

The workshop without a dull moment was the key for the successful participation of each and every person present. Participants were put through exercises and workouts, both physical and mental.  Group exercises were held to demonstrate the teamwork involved in a successful presentation of a play. In an event of presenting a drama, individual responsibilities from director to an actor and team work details were given very precisely.  Participants were given exercises in voice modulation, tone and tempo control, eye contact and breathing to bring out one’s optimum output. Delivery of a phrase in five different vocal variations made the participants feel the toughness and the softness of an actor depending on the character he/she plays.  A total description of parts of a stage, the lighting effects, stage possession, movements and the mannerisms involved to present oneself according to the character played was distinctly briefed. Variations from laughter to emotion, actions to words, gestures to body language and sense of presence, the core ingredients of a true actor were thoroughly presented.

At the end of the workshop that lasted seven hours, a questionnaire based on the topics presented was given to the participants to answer. Prizes were given to the winners of different categories . In the feedback session, participants gave their individual opinions and commented that it was one of the best workshop ever attended and preferred extended duration of the workshop and asked for more similar workshops to master the art.

The workshop was free of charge to all members of the club. Light refreshments and a sumptuous dinner was provided.

On behalf of MCC, President Alwyn D'Souza honored Lancy Pinto Nayak with a Memento and Cultural Secretary Reena Castelino presented a token of appreciation. Joint Secretary Riana Pinto offered vote of thanks.

It was the efforts of Cultural Secretary Reena Castelino to arrange the workshop in coordination with Lancy Pinto Nayak that paid rich benefits to the participants.

Thank you dear Mr.Lancy Pinto for conducting this potent workshop. It was both informative and participative and your energy I should say is infectious. The frame of mind when we all came in was " Yawn! just another workshop, what new does this workshop have to offer anyway ". One cannot blame how all or most of us think. I should say , all of us were pleasantly surprised with the experience and are certainly longing for more.

As a professional ,Mr.Lancy Pinto knows his trade and he has such a masterful presence on stage. It was such a joy to watch both Mr.Lancy Pinto naik and Mr.Eddie Sequeira in action & on the same stage. My one and only wish is to see Konkan youngsters learning from these 2 legends and keeping alive a dwindling art called Konkani Natak.

Thanks to Mr. Norbert for clearing Roshan''s misunderstanding. I think Roshan do not have any relatives or friends in Qatar or if they are here also they are not actively participating in the prayer sessions, mass, noveenas and all the festival celebrations which Church is organizing time to time. I am proud to say that though we are in Arab country, we are lucky enough to have a new , very big, beautiful and full of devotional Church in Qatar. MCC and MCA two associations are not leaving behind all Mangalorean Catholics or Konkani speakers when any festivals or Novenas are being celebrated in Mangalore, especially the Monthy Festh.

Hats of to MCC as there is yet another achievement and new forward step from MCC. Congratulations to MCC President, organizing team and Congratulations to Mr. Lancy Pinto Kamath for the extraordinary and successful workshop on modern drama theatre. Actually I thought that this workshop will be just boring session and have to sit all the time, just listen what the speaker says about. But for my surprise after the short introductions Mr. Lancy made all the participants to stand and then started the practical’s which continued for 7 hours!.

No one was tired and no one was bored for a single moment. There was the opportunity to every one to perform or to exhibit their talents in various categories and 2 songs were given to express with 5 different expressions which was amazing. There were physical and mental exercises with dance which I really enjoyed. As I do not have any background of drama or in theatre I got the opportunity to learn many new things which is very useful to any common person. As all participants were so actively involved and every one felt that time allotted for this workshop was too short. In future also looking forward for such type of workshops.

Even one was really privileged to share this workshop with our multi talented Mr. Eddy Sequiera. There was games of concentration, construction of given square, connecting continuous numbers and joining of the 9 dots without lifting the pen with drawing 4 lines. All the games were conducted by non other than Mr. Lancy. MCC, you have well experienced and excellent organizing committee and we have Mr. Eddy too, it is good idea to stick on this modern drama theatre and we can make something new in Qatar in love towards to our Konkani Mai baas. Last but not least snacks, tea, juice and quality dinner was served with variety of items. This workshop was much more than what every one had expected. Wishing every one all the best.

As an enthusiast of Theatre, I too attended this Modern Theatre Workshop more as a participant than as a guest of honour and found it a delightful and enlightening experience. Mr Lancy Nayak has a unique way of teaching the intricacies of Theatre which not only made the participants realize the discipline and hardwork that goes into producing good drama but also what great fun and immense satisfaction you can derive from it.

In that very short time all of us, the newcomers as well as little experienced like myself (please, I am definitely not a legend) learnt something new and I am sure this experience will help in laying a foundation to Mangalorean Konkani Theatre in Qatar. Congratulations Mr. Lancy on your good work and your genuine interest of building a strong respectful Konkani Theatre.

Also if I may add, we need to bring an awareness first amongst the actors and others involved, to appreciate good and forceful plays, rich with literary values, that are relevant to our society, so that we do not end up as producers of just ''Comedy Theatre'' Eddie Sequeira, Doha, Qatar
