Anna Hazare launches agitation for Lokpal again - Where is the media?

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Mar 24: About seven years ago, the entire nation had risen up against the then UPA government in response to the clarion call given by social reformer Anna Hazare over the issue of corruption and demand for Jan Lokpal. India went through an unprecendented show of solidarity against the menace of corruption as lacs of people gathered at Delhi's Ram Lila grounds to raise their voice in unison.

Today, Anna Hazare is at the same historic Ram Lila grounds in Delhi, on a hunger strike for the same demand of Jan Lokpal to investigate corruption cases. The difference - this time it is against the BJP-led NDA government.

There is another glaring difference, and that is the utter indifference shown by national news channels to Hazare's protest. Back in 2011, the entire nation had sat glued to television screens as lacs of people led by Hazare and his coterie of then supporters under the name of civil society - Arvind Kejriwal, the present CM of Delhi, Kiran Bedi, who later joined the BJP and is now the lieutenant governor of Puducherry, lawyer Prashant Bhushan and others - gathered at the Ram Lila grounds for days together.

The India Against Corruption movement, as it was called, captured the imagination of millions and was seen as a dawn of a new era of upright Indians, of an India that would take the path of righteousness and end corruption in public and private life. The mass protest was especially significant as it came at time when the then UPA government was dogged by massive corruption scams like the 2G Spectrum, the Commonweath Games and others. It was in fact seen as a major game-changer that catapulted the then chief minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi to national politics and ultimately led to his emergence as the Prime Minister.

News channels made the most of it, with prime time shows orchestrated to derive the maximum TRPs. A report by Wall Street Journal stated that in the two weeks that surrounded Hazare's fast, the viewership of news channels skyrocketed, with around 2.5 million more people a week turning to news channels than in earlier weeks. TV channels showed live images and updates of every minute of Hazare's hunger strike, from the beginning to the point where he finally broke his fast. Many had in fact pointed out that the media had gone 'overboard' with their coverage, some even saying that the neutrality of the media had been compromised in the way some of the news channels took sides.

Cut to 2018. The response of the media is blatantly inadequate. Apart from a passing mention of the protest among the headlines and some coverage among the several top stories for the day, the indefinite strike has hardly created a ripple on television. The reasons could be manifold - perhaps a certain belief that the protest would again end in no action from the government on implementation of the Lokpal bill, perhaps the whole idea of hunger strike against corruption has lost its steam, and therefore not worth the effort of coverage, or the open secret that some channels these days are more pro-government than pro-people. Channels like Times Now, Zee News and Arnab Goswami's Republic TV have often been criticised for being the 'mouthpiece' of the ruling BJP government. None of the mainstream news channels carried Hazare's strike in the prime time news. While Rajya Sabha polls and comeback of disqualified AAP MLAs grabbed headlines, there was not even a mention of Hazare's fast. No shouting constests in the name of debate, no opinions on corruption, not even a report. It is as if corruption is a non-existent issue in BJP-ruled India. BJP leader Sudhanshu Mittal has said that unlike the then UPA government, the present BJP government is 'completely clean', and hence the lukewarm response to the agitation.

Ironically, Hazare finds himself in a catch-22 situation today with no political outift willing to back him on the Lokpal bill. The Congress will not support him as it was against the UPA that Hazare had launched his 2011 movement, and the BJP won't either as it sits in the government. Kejriwal who was a staunch supporter of the movement then broke away to form his Aam Aadmi Party, and Hazare has himself made it clear that he does not want AAP's support. Some on Twitter have wondered if it is the CPI(M) sponsoring the agitation this time.

The sparse coverage however has not gone totally unnoticed. While the Twitterati is calling out the media on it, Tehseen Poonawalla, brother of Maharashtra Congress secretary Shehzad Poonawalla, sees a 'conspiracy'. He tweeted, "Well #AnnaHazare is only doing what he is at Ramlila Maidan coz he has been instructed by the govt to do so. Hope the opposition does not fall for this stunt! Game is: have a 'flop protest' & the govt will claim ..NO PUBLIC Support coz of the PMs credibility . (sic)"

One wonders if Poonawalla's claim is true given Anna Hazare's allegation that the government deliberately cancelled trains that were to carry protestors to Delhi. Sources in the Congress have claimed that the crowd mobilisation in the 2011 agitation was done by the RSS and the BJP, which will not happen this time. Ashutosh, spokesperson of the AAP, pointed out in an opinion piece to a website: "Now, the country is led by Modi, an extremely powerful and ruthless leader. He does not know how to surrender. There is public disenchantment with his government but his control over the media, particularly TV channels, is absolute. Seven years ago, it was the TV channels that made Anna Hazare the crusader against corruption and a ‘mahatma‘." He goes on to say that Anna Hazare was only a 'face' of the movement, while the actual command was with Kejriwal and his team. Their absence this time has had a major impact in the way the protest has turned into little more than a whimper.

It is a fact media support to the 2011 agitation played a vital role in its success. An agitation that is in public interest needs to reach the public, and it is the media that can make or break this reach. Without media support, Anna Hazare's agitation has turned into a run-of-the-mill protest that hardly catches anyone's attention. Whether media's indifference is orchestrated or not is anyone's guess.

BJP agent woke up one should support this clown. He is partly responsible for BJP government at the centre and people are suffering due to this useless BJP government. Where is Modi now? He was strong supporter of lokpal but did nothing inspite of having majority. Moral of the story is no political party wants strong lokpal. But Anna realised it too late.

The BJP/RSS agent has come again to divert the minds of people from the failures of Modi government like demonetization ,improper implementation of GST, unemployment, price rise, farmers suicide, lawlessness including unrest in J&K ,bank frauds etc. He thinks that once people forget all these failures of government he can disappear like earlier. What he gets for doing all these dramas at his old age also instead of honest ? Last time other than Kejrival and team all other leaders took part in his agitation joined BJP and both BJP and Congress are doing nothing other than religion politics, whereas Kejrival government is doing good work in Delhi in spite of no cooperation from central BJP government. So this time Anna can't fool the people .

People are now least interested to support any activism. End of the day they saw a Modi who emerged as a popular PM, but did nothing. They saw an exposed Anna, whose proximity with RSS which pushed him to do agitations, then he lost his way. They saw Kiren Bedi, Vinod Rai, Arnab Goswamy, VK Singh how they benefited, first by using apolitical mask, when actually they were working full time with BJP. Though, Kejriwal too emerged from the same, he did came out to showed his uniqueness and won election. Though, he is now apologizing and failing, yet he stands different from rest of his team.

The way media comes up with hash-tags, it clearly illustrated how they tweak and twist for the sake of their masters.

Nation lost a true democratic means of transformation method, from everything that happened and paying a price for going for fakers.

This (absence of mass and media) shows that there is complete eradication of top level corruption involving central government in India unlike in UPA time where every deal was linked with some political leaders which in turn attracted media and mass. However there should be more action on removing low level corruption which is effecting ordinary people. Hope the current NDA Govt will push for the same and my opinion is it looks like the intention and preparation is there (example - pushing AADHAR for subsidy distribution etc. ) to remove the low level corruption.
One of the very big positive thing about India now is no scams involving Central Govt ministers !

99 percent TV channels bik chuke hai. It is a waste of time watching these TV channels today because they are only singing bhajans in praise of the Modi government and BJP/RSS. Such TV anchors are behaving like an extra BJP spokeperson on TV debates. Political news is seldom reported unbiased here but mostly reported with a heavy spin and bias in favour of the BJP and Modi government. At other times Modi government/BJP cleverly bait the media or call it manipulation if you wish when they want to shift the narrative when the heat on them is getting too much.
Anna is just a BJP agent in the guise of a protester. People like Anna, KCR of the TRS party (Telangana), Ram Jethmalani are part of the BJP's strategy to divide and weaken the opposition by trying to keep the Congress party out of an overall united opposition strategy to oust the BJP in the next LS elections in 2019 or whenever it happens as the BJP has begun to sense public opinion going against them. In approx. 23 LS by polls since May 2014 BJP have lost all but 4.

Jan Lokpal bill, drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde (former Supreme Court Judge), seeks power to the Jan Lokpal to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission. Now, everyone knows CBI and other investigation agencies are all caged parrots. Govt employees and politicians now cannot be prosecuted without govt permission. With more than 50% MPs and MLAs having corrupt and criminal records, no govt dare to give power to Jan Lokpal to prosecute without it's permission. Modi govt or any other govt will again give new drafts of the bill, but will never give the power to Jan Lokpal as drafted by Santosh Hegde.

Santan bro, if simple people like you and I can understand that this Lokpal will not go through don't you think an experienced brain like Anna's does not understand this ? Of course, he does. So don't you think there is something else going on here ? Like a drama to prop up the Modi government and distract, divide and weaken the opposition ? Personally, I believe that one should never ever underestimate the BJP's and Amit Shah's capability of coming up with the most devious, sinister plans to ultimately win elections. In my opinion, Governance, administration, handling of the economy are not priorities for the Modi government and the BJP but winning elections are. Capture power anywhere, everywhere at any cost seems to be BJP's motto.

What Anna ji doesn't know are as follows
1.Annaji is as pure as water .But he is always against political parties contesting elections where as now it's impossible to mobilise crowd without collective electioneering .See at USA UK AUSTRALIA there is party system
2.Annaji doesn't know that RSS has changed now from Just Beleiving Hindu religious organisation into considering every Indian irrespective of his religion as one
3.During his 2011 Lot of corruption cases came out and public had no confidence in the Govt being headed by Sonia Gandhi.Whereas now people have full faith in Modi who is non corrupt
4.Now people know that Lokpal bill that has been passed already contains a clause that there should be a leader of opposition as member of Lokpal Committee. But in present Loksabha there is no leader of opposition as Congress got only 44 seats Instead of 55 required for leader of opposition .Thus ammendment is required for which Congress is not allowing the Parliament to function at all
Thus Congress is the root cause
And most importantly we have lot of Arm chair philosophers pressing agree disagree Commenting blogs etc But very few who want to come and join your protest

It was a tragic fast of Anna Hazare against the UPA government. Corruption did not end in the country by his fast. It got smarter under the NDA Government. His propped up a Central Government that is divisive in its policies, dishonest in its commitment and disruptive in harmony. Today the nation is craving for Dr. Manmohan Singh to be back as its leader. Anna Hazare's agenda is mischievous as the 2G Scam found none guilty. He takes gossip seriously and acts on it. Let him first find a solution to the problem of corruption in India which he has none. Media cannot be trusted today as they are biased and totally controlled by the big business houses and politicians. The fact that trains were canceled by the NDA government is a testimony on how much they appreciate a democratic way of dissent which the UPA gladly allowed. What is Pathanjali Yogi doing now? Is he comfortable with the status in India - Lies, Corruption, Dissent in the highest Judiciary, impotence in governance etc. Men of double standards and made of straw. Considering Anna Hazare a modern Gandhi is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi.
