Mangalore, Jul 15: Some main functionaries of Daiji Foundation and many admirers and friends of the late Mick Max assembled in the Sandesha Hall in Bajjodi on Saturday evening, where the disbursement of the Mick Max memorial fund to his family members was announced.

Although the actual funds were to be handed over on the occasion, since many donors from abroad had requested to extend the deadline by a month, it was decided to hand over a token contract to the family. More funds are expected to be received during this interim period.

Konkani Sahitya Academy member and sub editor of Mithr weekly Vitori Karkal welcomed the gathering. Daiji Foundation convener Hemacharya, Konkani Kutam Bahrain convener Richard Moras, singer-songwriter Wilfy Rebimbus, Konkani Sahitya Academy president Eric Ozario and Mick Max's wife Joyce D'souza were on the dais.

Hemacharya spoke at length on the motto of the Foundation and how the idea of helping Mick Max's family cropped up. He sentimentally expressed sadness that such a noble plan to help Konkani personalities of the past like Gabbu Urwa when they faced difficulties could not be implemented those days. However, he said, it was equally a matter of consolation that at least now on this project would keep rolling so that all those who had contributed their mite to the Konkani field would be extended a halping hand in their tough time in life. He spoke of chalking out a long-term plan to bring all artistes, writers and playwrights in Konkani the world over under a single banner.

He also said that when a meeting was called in Dubai regarding helping Mick Max's family, within three days there were assurances of amounts aggregating over Rs 3 lac. As on July 12, Rs 5 lac were a fully assured amount. He also felt that the people in the Gulf lived in an atmosphere of insecurity, yet so much had been done. Therefore  it was incumbent upon all the Konkani people back home to  continue this spirit and keep the project going.

He gratefully recalled the support he received from many Konkani-lovers from all over the world and media support from Daijiworld.com.

Richard Moras read out the letter of undertaking regarding the assured amount and also called out all the names of donors who contributed the aggregate amount of Rs 5 lac for the Mick Max Fund.

The contract papers were signed on behalf of the Foundation by Hemacharya and Richard Moras, while Joyce D'Souza and her brother Alfred D'Costa signed for the family.

Eric Ozario and Wilfy Rebimbus also spoke on the occasion and highly commended the efforts and initiative taken by the Foundation and assured the project of all support.

Vitori Karkal proposed a vote of thanks. The meeting was attended by a large number of Konkani writers, artistes, playwrights, journalists, columnists, singers, composers and the like.
