217 dead in Pakistan earthquake

Islamabad, Sep 25 (PTI): The death toll in the devastating earthquake that struck havoc in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province rose to 217 today, amid fears that it is likely to go up.

Many of the far-flung areas in Balochistan are yet to be reached by rescue teams because of the terrain and lack of proper roads.

Home Secretary Asad Gilani said yesterday's 7.7-magnitude earthquake had claimed the lives of 208 people and injured 350 others in Awaran district, Dawn daily quoted him as saying.

Deaths of seven more people were reported from Turbat city in Kech district of Balochistan.

Gilani that the long distance and disrupted road routes were causing obstacles to the relief efforts.

Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Malik Baloch yesterday declared an emergency in Awaran and five other districts.

Over 300 Army and Frontier Corps troops are already involved in rescue operations and military sources said further troops have been mobilised to the affected areas.

A large number of people were rescued from the debris of houses and the injured were given emergency medical aid by army and FC doctors and paramedics. Locals in Awaran district said no building in the town, including those of hospitals, schools and government buildings, remained intact.

The government of Balochistan has dispatched 1000 tents, 500 food bags, medicines, 15 ambulances towards Awaran, said Jan Buledi, the spokesman for Balochistan government.

Addressing a press conference, Buledi said the earthquake affected six districts in the province and that Awaran was the worst affected district where hundreds of mud-walled houses were demolished as result of the powerful earthquake.

The quake was so strong that it prompted a new 'island' to rise from the sea just off Pakistan's southern coast.

The earthquake caused the seabed to rise and create a small, mountain-like island about 600 meters off Gwadar coastline in the Arabian Sea.

A large number of people had gathered near the coast to witness the emergence of the island.

"The island popped up soon after the earthquake. Our staff stationed in Gwadar has reported that the island is about one and a half kilometres away from the coastline," said Dr Asif Inam, the Principal Scientific Officer of the National Institute of Oceanography.

It's the third time in 15 years that such a phenomenon has occurred along the Balochistan coast.

In any natural calamity we find it as God's act and this is believed by a few who believe in Super Natural power. For others it is simply a natural phenomena where also human contribution was there like damaging environment. There are a few places on the earth very prone to natural calmities. Japan always experience earth quake and Indonesia there are active volcanoes even today and we cannot say they are God damned places. And to relate natural calamities to the Gods revenge is a very foolish thinking and in any calmity man made or natural innocent people are affected most.

Healthy discussions from Madam Lydia Lobo and KRPrabuji.
    I appreciate both of them.
I am little more siding with Lydia Lobo.
Of course KRPrabhuji’s thinking was also not wrong.
We are humans and we humans think like humans.
    However God knows the unknown.
There is surely a wrath of God but I cannot say surely it is because suicide bombings to the worshiping Christians of the church.
Nevertheless these terrorists have not spared their own mosques, shias and sunnis. Concerning to others faith will these terrorists care?!
I condemn the heinous inhuman acts of the terrorists to the worshiping Christians in the Church.

I also feel sad for the innocents died in the earth quake.
Praise be to God and His name be Glorified.

A clear cut warning to terrorists from almighty God. Do not test God's patience. He is most loving and slow to anger. But, if you hurt His people, you will experience His wrath. Lord have mercy. Praise the Lord.

Lydia lobo, I totally agree with your comments. Earth quake is nothing do with church bombing. These comments can be made only by the religious fundamentalist. very cheap way of thinking. should feel the pain of people who lost their loved ones from the this natural calamities instead of making religious hate statement. No god will support revenge like this. revenge is ego of human being and not existed in gods world.

    Prabhu Sir,

Such advantages were taken after the disaster. Total greed of human beings. They did not even leave the coffers of the temple, bags and bags of wealth was looted !

Did the cloudburst happen because of something that humans would do afterwards or wasn't it natural for a cloud to burst anywhere ? If it had to happen at a holy place like Kedarnath and cause so much loss of life, what was the precursor then ?

I mean if Pakistan quake happened as a result of church bombings, result of what was this cloud burst ?

    Mr. Kr Prabhu & Shanawaz,

I disagree with both of your comments because an earthquake is a geographical phenomena. Earth's plates move for various reasons and its impact displays on the outer surface where the life is existing.

Thinking in the lines you guys, then why did the cloud burst in Kedarnath happen ?

Killing the people in Pakistan is man-made disaster. Matching it with this earth quake is not wisdom.

Dear Lobo,I do not attribute scientific reason alone for natural calamities.Cloud burst at Kedarnath also due to wrong doings by human. You might have read the news about the locals behavior with the victims of calamity, wherein water bottles were sold at Rs.200,capathi for Rs.300 rice bowl at Rs,300,for taking shelter under the roof Rs,400 per day in those days. Are those people are worth calling human beings?Such attrocities are unbearable even to the allmighty god.So I firmly believe that God curse on such places from time to time.Unfortunately even innocent becomes a prey for such gods curses in the race.

O lord of universe make us forgive to you for our sins. Make us among who regret for sins and make us among who refrain from sins before death overpowers us. There is no escape from your wrath. One will pay for his unpardonned sin in this life or he has the torment in the life hereafter. "Oh lord of universe " make our path to paradise easy and refrain us taking the path to hell. Amen

Now what about this Pak earth quake ? Within two days of Suicide Bombing in a Church in Pak and killing 70 devotees this earthquake took place.

The so called natural clamities like earth quakes, excess rains, cloud bursts, floods, hurricanes, tsunamies, draughts and famines are nothing but the wrath of God for the misdoings and sins of his creations (human beings). Pakistanins are instrumental in killing scores of innocent people world wide and most recent one is bombing a church in which many innocent faithfuls were killed..No sinner or killer goes unpunished..We should repent to God and turn to Him seeking forgiveness and refrain from wrong doings.. Without Gods mercy and blessings we are finished..

Innocent people are victims of Gods curse....in other way this is the curse invited by the Pakistanis having killed more than 80 Christians in the church who were in their weekly paryers,by bombing. Haramis will not understand .....
