Vasco, Nov 6: Vendors operating on the ground floor of the fire-ravaged Sunday Market in Vasco have strongly opposed the Mormugao Municipal Council’s (MMC) decision to evict them within 24 hours, demanding more time to make alternative arrangements and explore legal remedies.
The opposition follows an eviction notice issued by MMC Chief Officer Siddhivinayak S Naik on November 3, directing the vendors to vacate the fire-affected building within 24 hours.

The Council initiated the eviction process in compliance with directions from the South Goa Collector, following an adverse structural stability report on the damaged building.
The notice also directs the Council to cordon off the premises and prevent public entry. Assistant Engineers of the Electricity Department and the Department of Drinking Water have been instructed to disconnect electricity and water connections to the building.
In their response to the Chief Officer, the vendors questioned the short deadline, alleging that the Council had failed to follow the principles of natural justice before issuing the eviction notice.
While acknowledging the safety concerns arising from the negative structural assessment, the vendors maintained that they should have been given a reasonable opportunity to present their case and sufficient time to comply with the directions.
Describing the 24-hour deadline as unreasonable, they urged the Council to refrain from taking coercive action until their objections are considered.
The vendors have also sought protection from enforcement action for at least 24 hours from 12.30 pm on November 4. They said the additional time would allow them to submit their response and explore legal remedies against the eviction order.
The vendors further pointed out that the sudden directive had added to their difficulties, as many were already struggling to restore their livelihoods and safeguard their remaining belongings following the devastating fire.
