Agartala, Nov 6: Eight more people have been arrested for allegedly attacking Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Tripura’s Sepahijala district and injuring three of them, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 18, police said on Friday.

An assistant commandant was among the three BSF personnel injured when a group of villagers allegedly attacked them near the Ashabari border outpost on November 2. The incident reportedly occurred following the detention of a person on suspicion of involvement in smuggling activities.

During the attack, the mob allegedly vandalised a BSF vehicle and attempted to snatch weapons from the border guards.

A senior police officer said eight people had been arrested in connection with the attack. Earlier, 10 villagers who were allegedly directly involved in the November 2 incident had been taken into custody.

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha chaired a review meeting on the state's security situation on Thursday. Senior officials from the state administration, police, BSF, CRPF and Assam Rifles attended the meeting.

Saha said the Ashabari incident was also reviewed during the meeting. He directed the authorities to ensure strict legal action against those involved, adopt zero tolerance towards cross-border smuggling and strengthen security measures to maintain peace in the state.
