Udupi, Oct 30: Dr G S Chandrashekar, a senior physician and social worker, has been selected for the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award 2026, marking a proud moment for Udupi district. Throughout his medical career, he has embodied the values of humanity, care and social responsibility, proving that medical service goes beyond merely treating illnesses.
Born in a rural environment in Chikkamagaluru district in 1963, he completed his MBBS from the government medical college in Ballari and his MD in internal medicine from the government medical college in Mysuru. He began his career as a medical officer at the Udupi government hospital in 1991. Serving as a government doctor for around 15 years, he gained a close, practical understanding of the healthcare needs of the common man.

From a 60-bed facility to a 200-bed super-specialty hospital
Driven by the resolve to provide quality healthcare based on his vast experience in the government sector, he established Adarsha Hospital in Udupi in 2005 with a 60-bed capacity. Keeping the public's healthcare necessities in mind, he developed the facility in phases. Today, Adarsha Hospital stands as a fully equipped, 200-bed state-of-the-art super-specialty hospital. He has consistently prioritised a humane touch in patient care, striving to ensure that advanced healthcare remains accessible to everyone.
Contributions beyond healthcare into education
Dr Chandrashekar’s services extend far beyond the hospital's daily operations. As the president of the Adarsha Group of Educational Institutions, he is making significant contributions to the education sector. By providing quality education in nursing, allied health sciences and paramedical courses, he is actively involved in building the skilled human resources required for the modern healthcare sector. His efforts in providing better opportunities for the youth while instilling service-mindedness and professional values in them remain highly noteworthy.
A fitting state-level recognition for selfless service
His journey, which began as a rural boy who went on to become a government doctor, has now expanded into the establishment of a major medical institution, educational expansion and community-oriented initiatives. His vision of leading healthcare with human values rather than confining it to a commercial perspective has been the driving force behind his success. The Rajyotsava award is a fitting tribute to Dr Chandrashekar's decades of service and achievements, with the people of the district hoping his dedication will continue to inspire the younger generation in the medical fraternity.
