Udupi, Oct 29: A case has been registered against a tenant for allegedly throwing acid at his landlord and attempting to attack him with a machete following a dispute over the return of a house rental deposit in Udupi.
According to the complaint, Naveen Kumar (58), a resident of Shivalli village in Udupi, owns a shop on Railway Station Road near Kalkura Building. Suresh Acharya, who had been renting the first floor of the complainant’s house in Vishnumurthy Nagar, recently vacated the premises. The tenant had paid an advance deposit of Rs 20,000.

When Naveen inspected the house after the tenant vacated it, he allegedly found damage to the walls and taps. He informed Suresh that two months’ rent and the repair costs would be deducted from the advance amount. However, Suresh allegedly refused to accept the deduction and demanded the entire Rs 20,000, threatening that he would not let the matter go otherwise. He allegedly visited Naveen’s shop on October 23 and threatened him.
On October 28, at around 3.30 pm, while Naveen was working at his shop near Kalkura Building on Railway Station Road, Suresh allegedly arrived and started arguing loudly with him over the rental deposit. He then reportedly went outside and took a bottle containing acid and a large machete from his scooter. He allegedly threatened to burn and kill Naveen by throwing acid on him and then hacking him with the weapon.
According to the complaint, Suresh allegedly threw acid at Naveen with the intention of killing him and subsequently attempted to attack him with the machete. Naveen managed to hide and escape the attack. However, the acid reportedly caused burns to his right hand, waist, abdomen, feet, face and left hand.
Based on the complaint, Udupi City police have registered a case.
