Kingsmead, Oct 14: Temba Bavuma’s impressive run as South Africa’s Test captain came to an end as Australia registered a commanding 214-run victory in the opening match of the three-Test series at Kingsmead in Durban. The win gave Pat Cummins and his team a 1-0 lead in the series and ended South Africa’s 12-match winning streak under Bavuma’s leadership.

Australia’s victory was built around a remarkable batting performance by Matt Renshaw, who rescued his team from difficult situations in both innings. The 30-year-old struck 190 runs in the first innings after Australia had slipped to 84/4, helping the visitors recover from early setbacks.

With Cummins contributing 43 runs, Australia posted 390 in their first innings. Wiaan Mulder was South Africa’s most successful bowler, claiming four wickets.

South Africa struggled to respond, with none of their batters managing to score a half-century. Despite several small contributions, the hosts were dismissed for 284, conceding a first-innings lead of 106 runs. Cummins led the Australian bowling attack with three wickets.

Australia continued to strengthen their position in the second innings. Returning opener Nic Maddinson scored 48, while Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith made useful contributions. Renshaw again stepped up under pressure, scoring 82 runs to give the visitors a solid platform.

Beau Webster remained unbeaten on 39, while Cummins provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 32 off just 12 deliveries. Australia declared at 314/6, setting South Africa a challenging target of 420 runs.

Chasing the imposing target, South Africa depended heavily on Aiden Markram, who scored 75. David Bedingham added 46, but the hosts failed to build substantial partnerships and were unable to sustain their chase.

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood delivered a decisive performance in the fourth innings, claiming six wickets, while Renshaw picked up two more as South Africa were unable to prevent defeat.

The 214-run triumph handed Australia a crucial 1-0 advantage in the series and brought Bavuma’s remarkable winning run as Test captain to a halt.
