Mangaluru, Sep 22: The volunteers of NSS Unit of Yenepoya School of Engineering and Technology participated in the beach cleanup programme held at Tannirbhavi Beach, Mangaluru, on September 19, as part of the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 5.0 campaign and International Coastal Cleanup Day. The programme was organized by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) in association with the Forest, Ecology & Environment Department of Mangaluru. The initiative brought together officers, employees, CISF personnel, students and other volunteers to address marine litter and promote responsible practices towards coastal conservation.

The volunteers joined the other participants in clearing waste from the beach. Plastic bottles, food wrappers and other discarded materials were collected from the shore and placed in designated waste collection areas. Their involvement provided an opportunity to put the values of NSS into practice through community service and environmental responsibility. Working alongside participants from different organizations also made the programme a valuable team experience. The activity highlighted the extent to which everyday waste can find its way into coastal environments. It also emphasized the importance of reducing unnecessary plastic use and ensuring that waste is disposed of properly rather than allowing it to reach beaches and the sea.

The programme formed part of the fifth edition of the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar campaign, conducted from September 12 to 19. The campaign focuses on reducing pollution along India's coastline and encouraging public participation in protecting marine ecosystems.

The initiative was also conducted in connection with Swachhata Pakhwada 2026 and International Coastal Cleanup Day.
