New Delhi, Aug 7: Delhi has reported 1,179 dengue cases and 1,344 H1N1 (swine flu) infections so far this year, with no deaths linked to either disease, according to official data.
Hospitals in the national capital have treated a total of 1,389 dengue patients, including 210 patients from outside Delhi, while the remaining 1,179 cases were reported from within the city.
Health authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as the monsoon season creates favourable conditions for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Common symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting and skin rash. Most patients recover within one to two weeks, though severe cases may require hospitalisation.
Doctors have advised people to seek immediate medical attention if warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, bleeding, extreme weakness or blood in vomit or stools develop.
Health experts recommend preventing mosquito breeding by eliminating stagnant water, using mosquito repellents, wearing full-sleeved clothing and installing window screens or mosquito nets.
Meanwhile, Delhi has also recorded 1,344 H1N1 cases, with no fatalities reported.
H1N1 is a contagious influenza virus that primarily affects the respiratory system. Symptoms include sudden fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle pain and fatigue. While most patients recover within a week, pregnant women, young children, senior citizens and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immunity are at a higher risk of complications.
Doctors have advised those with mild symptoms to rest, stay hydrated and avoid close contact with others. Individuals experiencing severe symptoms or those in high-risk categories have been urged to seek medical care promptly.
Health authorities have reiterated that seasonal influenza vaccination, good hand hygiene, proper respiratory etiquette and staying home while unwell remain the most effective measures to reduce the spread of H1N1.
Despite the rise in infections, officials confirmed that no deaths have been reported due to either dengue or H1N1 in Delhi so far this year.
