Chennai, Jul 20: Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi defeated reigning world champion D. Gukesh in a crucial fifth-round encounter to move into joint lead at the Chennai Grand Masters 2026, India's premier classical chess tournament, being held at The Westin Chennai Velachery.
Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov also strengthened his title challenge with a convincing victory over Nihal Sarin, keeping himself firmly in contention with only two rounds remaining.
Following the fifth round, Erigaisi and French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja share the top spot with 3.5 points each, while Abdusattorov sits just half a point behind on 3 points.
The eight-player round-robin tournament carries a prize pool of Rs 75 lakh and offers valuable FIDE Circuit points, making it one of the most significant events on the Indian chess calendar.
After all four games in the previous round had ended in draws, Abdusattorov produced a dominant performance with the black pieces against Nihal Sarin. He gradually built up pressure before forcing the Indian Grandmaster to resign after 38 moves.
The marquee all-Indian clash between Erigaisi and Gukesh began with the ceremonial opening move played by Tamil Nadu prodigy Jeshua J, who holds the distinction of becoming the youngest Arena FIDE Master at the age of 7 years, 10 months and 8 days.
Playing with the black pieces, Erigaisi maintained a solid position throughout the opening and patiently capitalised on inaccuracies from Gukesh during the middlegame. As the position simplified, Erigaisi's passed d-pawn became unstoppable, and with promotion inevitable, the world champion resigned on move 63.
Meanwhile, Firouzja, who had won his opening two games, settled for a 41-move draw against Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Andreikin, allowing Erigaisi to catch him at the top of the standings.
