Chennai, Jul 17: French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja continued his impressive run at the Chennai Grand Masters 2026, defeating reigning world champion D. Gukesh in the second round to register his second consecutive victory at the prestigious classical chess tournament on Friday.
Playing with the white pieces, Firouzja outlasted Gukesh in a hard-fought 69-move encounter at the Westin Hotel in Chennai, taking his tally to a perfect two points from two rounds.

Organised by MGD1, the eight-player elite tournament follows a double round-robin format and offers a prize pool of Rs 75 lakh, along with valuable FIDE Circuit points.
The ceremonial first move in the marquee clash was made by Deepraj Mukherjee, General Manager of Westin Chennai Velachery. Firouzja opened with the Ruy Lopez, and although Gukesh defended resiliently in a knight-and-pawn endgame, the French Grandmaster's timely pawn sacrifice created the breakthrough that ultimately secured victory.
Elsewhere, Indian Grandmaster M. Pranesh, who suffered defeat in the opening round, settled for a quick draw with Dmitry Andreikin. Playing with the black pieces, Pranesh repeated moves after just 18 moves to split the point.
In another closely contested game, Arjun Erigaisi held Nodirbek Abdusattorov to a draw after 43 moves, while Nihal Sarin displayed remarkable defensive skills to draw against American Grandmaster Hans Niemann in a marathon encounter lasting 132 moves.
Firouzja had begun the tournament with a victory over M. Pranesh in the opening round, capitalising on a rook-and-pawn endgame after 79 moves to emerge as the only winner on the first day.
