Small fire breaks out on Brooklyn Bridge during July 4 fireworks

New York, Jul 5: A small fire briefly broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during Macy's Fourth of July fireworks display over New York City's East River on Saturday night, officials said.

Videos shared on social media showed flames and thick black smoke rising from multiple sections of the bridge as fireworks continued to explode overhead. Witnesses reported that at least three spots on the bridge caught fire during the display.

The flames were extinguished within about a minute, and the fireworks show continued without interruption.

Mohamed Shaban, who witnessed the incident, said the fire started small before growing larger, producing thick black smoke.

Another spectator, Khoula, said several fires appeared to erupt simultaneously and that additional fireworks exploded as the blaze spread.

The New York City Fire Department dispatched two fire engines to the scene. Officials said minor fires can occur during large-scale fireworks displays and that safety measures are in place to keep spectators at a safe distance.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the bridge sustained any damage, and the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The incident occurred as millions of Americans celebrated the nation's 250th Independence Day with fireworks, parades, concerts and community events across the United States. In several parts of the country, however, severe weather and extreme heat forced organisers to modify or cancel planned celebrations.
