Mumbai, Jun 25: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday called on Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners to move beyond symbolic displays of solidarity and function as a truly united opposition force, amid recent political setbacks faced by his party.
Addressing MLAs and MLCs of the MVA constituents during a coordination meeting, Thackeray posed a pointed question to alliance members: “We say that we are united as the Maha Vikas Aghadi, but are we really united?”

The meeting, attended by leaders of Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), focused on formulating a joint strategy for the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature and reviewing the prevailing political situation in the state.
According to sources, Thackeray stressed that unity should not remain limited to public statements and press conferences, but should be reflected in coordinated political action both inside and outside the legislature.
The discussion comes against the backdrop of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs recently switching sides, dealing a setback to the party. However, Thackeray reportedly urged colleagues not to dwell on those who had left, and instead focus on strengthening the alliance and highlighting issues affecting the people of Maharashtra.
Senior MVA leaders emphasised that the opposition could effectively challenge the ruling Mahayuti alliance only through better coordination and collective action. Legislators were urged to raise public issues aggressively during the session and maintain constant communication with alliance partners.
Leaders also underscored the need for more frequent meetings among the top MVA leadership, saying stronger coordination at the leadership level would help improve cooperation among legislators and sharpen the opposition's strategy.
However, the meeting also highlighted internal challenges facing the alliance. Despite repeated appeals for unity, attendance was relatively low, with only 37 of the nearly 60 MLAs and MLCs from the three alliance partners present.
The turnout reflected the concerns raised by Thackeray, with leaders acknowledging that while the MVA continues to project a united front, translating that unity into effective organisational and legislative action remains a challenge.
As the monsoon session progresses, MVA leaders hope the call for greater cohesion will strengthen the alliance's role as the principal opposition force in Maharashtra.
