Udupi, Jun 24: The police have arrested a warrant accused who had allegedly evaded the law and remained absconding for nearly 36 years.

The arrested accused has been identified as Noorulla (66), a resident of Nittur in Hirekerur taluk of Haveri district.

A case under the Karnataka Forest Act had been registered against him at the Udupi Town police station on June 21, 1990. The accused was arrested the following day and produced before the court. After being remanded to judicial custody, Noorulla secured bail and was released.

However, he subsequently failed to appear before the court for trial proceedings and remained absconding for a prolonged period. In view of his non-appearance, the court had issued a warrant against him.

Acting on credible information, a team from the Udupi police travelled to Nittur in Hirekerur taluk of Haveri district and successfully apprehended Noorulla on June 22.

The accused, who was traced and arrested after 36 years, was produced before the judge along with the warrant. The court has remanded him to judicial custody.

Udupi police have launched a special operation to trace and apprehend accused persons who have been absconding for decades.
