India urges Bangladesh to act against extremists, ensure safety of minorities

New Delhi, Jun 23: India on Tuesday expressed concern over reports of desecration involving Hindu deities and called on the Bangladesh government to take firm action against extremist elements while ensuring the safety and security of minority communities.

Addressing the weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India was closely monitoring developments in Bangladesh following reports that triggered widespread protests.

"We have seen reports from Bangladesh regarding acts of desecration involving Hindu deities and their images, which have sparked protests. We expect the Bangladeshi government to curb the extremists there and guarantee the safety of the minority community," Jaiswal said.

The remarks came amid growing unrest in Bangladesh following allegations that radical Islamist groups desecrated an image of Lord Ram during protests opposing the construction of a proposed statue of the deity in Gaibandha district, according to local media reports.

The controversy has led to demonstrations across several parts of the country. Last week, thousands of members of the Hindu community participated in torchlight marches in Dhaka, chanting "Jai Shri Ram" and demanding action against those allegedly involved in the incident.

Bangladeshi journalist and editor Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury highlighted the protests on social media, stating that members of the Hindu community had pledged to expand their movement nationwide in response to recent events.

The tensions intensified after authorities ordered the suspension of construction work on a proposed Lord Ram statue at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda and Kali Temple in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district.

Temple adviser Shyamal Kumar Mahant announced the decision during a press conference held on June 11.

The suspension has drawn criticism from various quarters, with some alleging that the decision was influenced by pressure from Islamist groups opposed to the project.

India has repeatedly emphasised the importance of protecting minority communities in neighbouring Bangladesh and has urged authorities there to uphold law and order while ensuring religious freedom and communal harmony.

The latest developments have once again brought focus to the security of minority communities and the need for effective measures to prevent religious tensions from escalating further.
