New Delhi, Jun 16: The Central government has given the go-ahead for the redevelopment of several busy railway stations, including Mangaluru Central, Borivali and Ambala. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday reviewed the redevelopment plans and issued necessary directions to officials.
The redevelopment project for the heavily congested Mangaluru Central railway station proposes the construction of two new platforms to enhance operational capacity. The plan also includes the upgrading of existing platforms, construction of a new 6-metre-wide foot overbridge, improved platform shelters, and the installation of additional escalators and lifts to facilitate smooth passenger movement within the station premises.

During the review, the railway minister instructed officials to ensure that redevelopment works are carried out without causing inconvenience to passengers.
At present, Mangaluru Central railway station handles more than 28,000 passengers daily and caters to around 50 train services. With passenger traffic expected to increase further in the coming years, expanding the station’s capacity and upgrading its infrastructure have become essential, the redevelopment proposal noted.
