Iran claims US peace deal finalised, announces end to naval blockade and planned nuclear talks

Daijiworld Media Network - Tehran

Tehran, June 15: Iranian officials have announced that a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States is set to be signed later this week, with Tehran claiming that the agreement includes the lifting of the US naval blockade, an end to military operations and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi, the US naval blockade against Iran will be lifted from Monday night, while military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, would come to an immediate and permanent halt.

Gharibabadi said the two countries are scheduled to sign the final draft of the peace agreement in Switzerland on June 19, according to reports carried by Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Tasnim also quoted an unnamed source as saying that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened following the signing ceremony.

Iran's state-run IRIB television further reported that Tehran's participation in a proposed 60-day negotiation period on its nuclear programme and sanctions relief would depend on Washington fulfilling a series of preliminary commitments.

Iranian authorities said those commitments would be independently verified by Tehran before the agreement is formally signed.

Earlier on Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on social media platform X that the United States and Iran had reached a peace agreement after intensive negotiations.

Sharif stated that both sides had agreed to the "immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon", adding that international mediators would facilitate meetings this week to prepare for the implementation of the accord.

Shortly afterwards, US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that the US-Iran peace agreement was "now complete". He also announced that he had authorised the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

However, questions remain over the implementation of certain aspects of the reported agreement.

Israel's Ma'ariv news website, citing Israeli sources, reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Trump during a phone conversation that Israel did not consider itself bound by the Lebanon-related provisions of the proposed US-Iran arrangement.

The reported breakthrough came unexpectedly, especially after Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) issued a warning on Sunday evening about a possible response to an earlier Israeli strike on Lebanon's capital, Beirut.

Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of the SNSC, was quoted by Iranian state television as saying, "Lebanon is our lifeblood, and any violation of Iran's red lines will not be tolerated."

The developments have drawn significant international attention, although official details regarding the terms, enforcement mechanisms and broader international backing for the reported agreement have yet to be independently confirmed.
