Cyberattack disrupts services at four major Iranian banks, customer data safe

Tehran, Jun 14: A cyberattack temporarily disrupted services at four major Iranian banks, though no customer data was compromised, Iran's Banking Coordination Council said on Sunday.

According to state media reports, the attack targeted a shared communications infrastructure used by Bank Melli, Bank Tejarat, Bank Saderat and the Export Development Bank of Iran.

The incident prompted technical teams to activate protective measures, resulting in temporary disruptions to certain banking services across the affected institutions.

The Banking Coordination Council said investigations found no evidence of unauthorised access to customer information and confirmed that no data had been deleted during the cyberattack.

Officials assured customers that banking records remain secure and that recovery operations are underway to restore all services to normal at the earliest.

The council did not disclose the source of the attack or provide details on the nature of the breach. Authorities said technical teams are continuing their assessment while strengthening security measures across the banking network.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure and financial institutions across the region. Iranian officials have repeatedly highlighted the need to enhance cybersecurity capabilities to safeguard essential services from potential attacks.

Banking operations at the affected institutions are expected to gradually return to normal as restoration efforts continue.
