Autorickshaw driver dies days after vehicle overturns on Mumbai’s new link road

Mumbai, Jun 13: A 50-year-old autorickshaw driver who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in Mumbai succumbed to his injuries five days later while undergoing treatment at Sion Hospital.

The deceased, identified as Amarnath Yadav, had been admitted to the hospital after the autorickshaw he was driving overturned on New Link Road in the western suburbs of the city.

According to police, the accident took place on June 5 when Yadav was travelling from Malad towards Jogeshwari along the southbound carriageway of New Link Road. As he approached the Oshiwara bus depot around 11.30 am, he reportedly applied the brakes suddenly, causing the three-wheeler to lose balance and overturn.

The impact left Yadav with multiple injuries, including wounds to his forehead, face, nose, shoulder, ribs, hip, knee and arm. He was immediately rushed to Sion Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) for treatment.

In a statement recorded by police, his son Rahul Yadav said his father initially showed signs of recovery and was later shifted from intensive care to a general ward. However, his condition worsened again in the following days.

Despite medical efforts, Amarnath Yadav died at the hospital at around 11.30 pm on June 10.

The Bangur Nagar Police were informed of the death the next morning and subsequently recorded the statement of the victim’s son as part of the investigation.

Police had earlier registered a case of rash and negligent driving against Yadav in connection with the accident. Officials said the case will now be closed following his death.
