Vasco, Jul 26: A 36-year-old man from Chhattisgarh lost his life after coming into contact with a live high-tension power line that snapped and fell onto the Panaji–Margao highway during heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Ankit Lakra, who was travelling in an autorickshaw when the incident occurred near the Birla Cross junction at around 10 p.m.

According to police, an 11 kV high-tension electricity wire broke due to the adverse weather conditions and crashed onto the road. On hearing the crackling sound, Lakra reportedly got out of the autorickshaw in an attempt to move to safety.

However, as he stepped onto the road, he accidentally came into contact with the live wire and was electrocuted. He died on the spot.

The autorickshaw driver escaped the incident without sustaining any injuries.

The Verna Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway under the supervision of Police Inspector Anand Shirodkar to ascertain all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
