Ballia, Jun 12: The Government Railway Police (GRP) recovered Rs 36.25 lac in unaccounted cash from a jewellery trader during a checking operation aboard the Chhapra Express in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, officials said.

According to GRP Circle Officer Saviratna Gautam, a police team was conducting routine inspections on the train travelling from Gomti Nagar in Lucknow to Chhapra in Bihar when they noticed a passenger carrying a red bag in a sleeper coach.

The passenger was identified as Sanchit Agrawal, a resident of the Nawab Sahab Ka Phatak area.

During the search, police recovered Rs 36.25 lakh in cash from the bag. Officials said Agrawal was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the money or produce valid documents supporting its transportation.

During questioning, Agrawal reportedly told police that he owned a jewellery shop in Ghazipur and was carrying the cash to deliver it to another jewellery business near Chhapra Kachhari railway station in Bihar.

The GRP has informed the Investigation Wing of the Income Tax Department in Varanasi, which has initiated an inquiry into the matter. Further legal action is being taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation, officials added.
