Udupi: SMVITM students developed AI-powered sign language translator

Media Release

Udupi, Jun 11: Final-year students of the department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) at SMVITM, Bantakal, developed VAANI-DRISHTI, an innovative Artificial Intelligence-based system designed to bridge communication gaps between Indian Sign Language (ISL) users and the hearing community.

The project enables real-time bidirectional communication by translating ISL gestures into speech and converting spoken language into ISL video outputs. Using Support Vector Machine (SVM)-based gesture recognition and Natural Language Processing (NLP), the system ensures seamless interaction between users.

The project was developed by students M Manish, Nishanth, Nishanth A Jatthan, and Surabhi Jogi under the guidance of Dr Mamatha I. By integrating hand gesture recognition, speech processing, language modelling, and an intuitive user interface, the system aims to enhance accessibility and promote social inclusion for individuals with hearing and speech impairments.

The project highlights the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in developing innovative solutions that enable equal communication opportunities for all sections of society.
