India revises registration rules for foreigners staying beyond 180 days

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 2: The Union Home Ministry has amended the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, requiring foreign nationals arriving in India on visas valid for 180 days or less to register themselves before the expiry of the 180-day period if they intend to stay beyond the permitted duration.

The revised provision was notified on Monday, Jun 1, and replaces the earlier rule that allowed foreigners to register within 14 days after completing 180 days of stay in India.

Under the new regulations, foreign nationals wishing to extend their stay beyond the initial visa period must complete the registration process at any time before the expiry of the 180-day period.

The amendment is aimed at streamlining immigration procedures and ensuring better monitoring of foreign nationals residing in the country beyond their original visa duration.

Officials said the revised timeline will help authorities maintain more accurate records and improve compliance with immigration regulations.

The changes form part of the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, notified by the Union Home Ministry and are expected to affect foreign visitors, students, professionals and others seeking longer stays in India.

Further operational guidelines regarding implementation of the revised registration requirement are expected to be issued by the authorities.
