Udupi, May 22: The Udupi district police have activated six advanced speed radar cameras along various stretches of the national highway passing through the district as part of efforts to strengthen traffic enforcement and improve road safety.

Superintendent of police of Udupi district, Hariram Shankar, stated that the newly installed radar cameras are now operational and will automatically detect traffic violations. Vehicles violating traffic regulations will be monitored from the district control room, and challans related to offences will be sent to vehicle owners by post.

The speed radar cameras have presently been installed at six locations across the district. SP Hariram Shankar added that another 14 locations have already been identified for the next phase of installation. The tender process has been completed, and work orders will be issued shortly, he said.

The six locations where the radar cameras have been installed are: Doopadakatte in Karkala – speed limit 60 kmph; Uchila in Padubidri – speed limit 80 kmph; near Dandatheertha School in Kaup – speed limit 80 kmph; Thekkatte in Kota – speed limit 80 kmph; Trasi in Gangolli – speed limit 80 kmph; and Nayakanakatte in Byndoor – speed limit 80 kmph.

The superintendent of police clarified that the speed limits have been fixed in accordance with the norms prescribed by the National Highways Authority and highway traffic regulations.

Apart from overspeeding, the radar-based surveillance system will also detect several other traffic violations, including triple riding, seat belt violations, riding without helmets, using mobile phones while driving, wrong-side driving, and other breaches of traffic rules.

The police department stated that all violations captured by the radar cameras will be centrally monitored from the district control room. Vehicle owners receiving challans can visit any police station in Udupi district and pay the penalty amount within seven days of receiving the notice.

The initiative is expected to enhance road discipline on busy national highway stretches in Udupi district and help reduce accidents caused by reckless driving and traffic violations.

Excellent initiative; however, more cameras should be installed in between express-bus bus stops as they are the ones that most frequently violate the traffic law by overtaking from the wrong side, rarely utilising left-right indicators before stopping or overtaking, and persistently honking at decibel levels well over the permitted limits.

This camera is too visible, so everyone can easily spot it. Because of this, drivers reduce the speed of their vehicles when they reach the area where the camera is installed, and as a result, no one gets fined. Therefore, the purpose of installing this camera is not being effectively achieved.

This should reduce traffic violations and accidents considerably. After all this is for the benefit of the people, by the people, for the people and of the people.

Wow nice initiative. Appreciate it. But the respective departments should make sure that fines would be high for the violations and shouldn't be discounted or waved off because of some high profile connections. Also the fines which are collected needs to be used to improve the roads and not fill in their personal pockets. When the fines are and high and pockets become lighter all will start following rules and incidents/accidents will reduce.
