Karkala, May 20: A major road accident near Belman panchayat office on Wednesday evening ended in what locals described as a miraculous escape, after a car crashed into the rear of a stationary lorry, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged but its occupants with only minor injuries.

According to sources, the lorry had been loaded with jelly from a crusher in Nandalike and was parked by the roadside near the Panchayat parking area while en route towards Karwar.

At the same time, a car travelling from Mudigere towards Padubidri reportedly lost control and rammed at high speed into the rear of the parked lorry.

The impact was severe enough to completely crumple the front portion of the car. However, in what is being described as a providential escape, the driver and other passengers miraculously survived the crash with minor injuries and were stated to be out of danger.

Local residents said the stretch has become accident-prone, alleging that heavy vehicles, including lorries and tipper trucks, are frequently parked on both sides of the highway during evening hours, creating dangerous conditions for motorists and leading to repeated mishaps.
