Nanus residents protest drinking water shortage

Valpoi, May 11: Residents of several households in the Nanus area have expressed anger over an acute shortage of drinking water for the past two days, forcing authorities to supply water through tankers after the issue gained attention on social media.

According to sources, many families in Nanus have been facing irregular water supply from the Dabos water project for nearly a year.

Residents alleged that the water pressure has remained extremely low, making it difficult for many households to receive sufficient water supply.

Locals complained that it takes nearly an hour to fill a single pot due to the poor pressure in the pipelines.

The situation worsened after water supply was completely disrupted from Saturday morning, triggering strong resentment among villagers. Residents reportedly came onto the roads and criticised the functioning of the Water Supply Department.

Following reports and videos circulating on social media, officials from the Valpoi Water Supply Department responded swiftly and arranged two water tankers to the area on Sunday afternoon to provide temporary relief.

Though residents welcomed the tanker supply, they questioned how long such temporary arrangements would continue.

“For the past one year, water has not been supplied regularly. We never know when water will come through the taps. Due to very low pressure, it takes at least an hour to fill one pot,” residents complained.

Officials from the department said the existing water pipeline supplying the area is very old and has limited carrying capacity, resulting in inadequate supply.

They stated that a larger and new pipeline is necessary to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the locality.

According to officials, efforts are underway to obtain approval for laying a new pipeline, which they said would permanently resolve the drinking water shortage issue.

Until then, authorities assured that water tankers would continue supplying water whenever required.

Meanwhile, residents expressed satisfaction that the department acted quickly after the issue received public attention through social media.
