Delhi on high alert after terror threat inputs

New Delhi, May 9: Delhi has been placed on high alert following intelligence inputs warning of possible terror attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at key locations across the national capital, sources said.

According to intelligence inputs, terrorists may target important installations and crowded areas in Delhi, prompting the police and security agencies to intensify surveillance and security arrangements across sensitive zones.

Following the alert, extensive checking operations were launched at several strategic locations in the city. Security was also tightened outside the Bharatiya Janata Party state office in Delhi and the party’s national headquarters, where additional police personnel and barricades were deployed.

Sources said security personnel stationed at key installations could also be potential targets.

The latest alert comes weeks after the Delhi Police Special Cell reportedly busted a module linked to Pakistan-based gangster-terror operative Shahzad Bhatti, who is alleged to have links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. Nine persons were arrested in connection with the case, according to sources.

Investigators reportedly found during interrogation that the accused were allegedly planning targeted attacks in Delhi and nearby areas.

Sources further claimed that reconnaissance of several high-profile locations, including a prominent temple in the capital, had allegedly been carried out and videos shared with handlers across the border.

The module had allegedly planned to target police and paramilitary personnel deployed at the temple to create panic and chaos, sources said.

Officials also claimed that one of the accused had been assigned to carry out a grenade attack at a popular dhaba along the Delhi–Sonipat highway, a location known for heavy public footfall.

Sources further alleged that a military camp in Hisar was also surveyed and videos of the area were sent to handlers. Some police stations in Uttar Pradesh were reportedly on the target list as well.

Security agencies have increased CCTV monitoring, vehicle checks and deployment of bomb disposal squads, dog squads and quick reaction teams across vulnerable locations in the city.

Officials, however, said the heightened measures are precautionary in nature and urged the public to remain vigilant without panicking
