Washington, May 6: Job openings in the United States remained unchanged at 6.9 million in March, according to fresh data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, reflecting a labour market marked by uncertainty and uneven momentum.
The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey showed a rise in layoffs during the month. At the same time, hiring activity picked up and more workers voluntarily left their jobs—often seen as a sign of confidence in employment prospects.

Job openings have steadily declined since peaking at 12.3 million in March 2022, as employers remain cautious due to high interest rates, policy uncertainties, and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on the workforce.
So far in 2026, job creation has been inconsistent. Employers added 160,000 jobs in January and 178,000 in March, but February saw a contraction of 133,000 positions, highlighting volatility in hiring trends.
Attention now turns to the upcoming employment report from the US Department of Labor, which is expected to provide further clarity. Forecasts compiled by FactSet suggest that April may see a modest increase of 57,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate projected at 4.3 per cent.
Some economists are warning of a potential slowdown ahead. Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research indicated that hiring could weaken, particularly in sectors like restaurants, as rising fuel costs reduce consumer spending power.
Concerns are also growing among analysts about broader economic sentiment. Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Darrell West noted that layoffs at major companies are adding to public anxiety about financial stability.
The labour market outlook is increasingly intertwined with politics ahead of the midterm elections, posing a challenge for the administration of Donald Trump. With rising costs for housing, food, and borrowing, economic pressures are mounting for many Americans.
Analysts warn that unless there is a turnaround in economic conditions, the situation could have significant political implications, particularly for the Republican Party in the upcoming elections.
