KMC Hospital Attavar to host free HLA typing camp for patients on World Thalassemia Day

Media Release

Mangaluru, May 6: Marking World Thalassemia Day 2026, KMC Hospital Attavar, in association with the department of paediatric oncology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, will organise a free Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Typing Camp on Friday, May 8, aimed at helping thalassemia patients explore the possibility of curative bone marrow transplantation.

The camp will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at Tower II, Lecture Hall 1, KMC Hospital Attavar, Mangaluru. Participation is limited and prior appointments are mandatory.

HLA typing is a critical test used to identify compatibility between a patient and a potential bone marrow donor. In many thalassemia cases, a successful bone marrow transplant can offer a long-term cure. Since siblings and immediate family members are more likely to be compatible donors, patients are required to attend the camp along with their siblings and/or parents.

Specialists from the department of paediatric oncology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, will conduct the camp and guide families regarding HLA matching, transplant possibilities, and future treatment options.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr Chakrapani, medical superintendent, KMC Hospital Attavar, said the hospital remains committed to making advanced and life-saving care accessible to children and families affected by blood disorders.

“Thalassemia places a significant emotional and financial burden on families. Through this initiative, we hope to help eligible patients move one step closer towards a possible cure. Every successful donor match can change the course of a child’s life,” he said.

World Thalassemia Day is observed annually on May 8 to raise awareness about thalassemia, encourage early diagnosis, and improve access to treatment and supportive care for patients across the world.

Appointments for the camp can be booked by calling 9606035387.
