Mangaluru, May 6: The Konkani theatrical landscape is preparing for a monumental achievement as ‘Matharo Charbela’, the 33rd drama penned by acclaimed Comedy King Francis Fernandes Cascia, approaches its 100th performance. A special series of shows has been scheduled in Mumbai and Chikkamagaluru during the summer holiday season to commemorate this rare feat in regional theatre.
Since its debut in Mira Road, Mumbai, in November 2007, the production has evolved into a global sensation. It has completed 97 performances to date, spanning major Indian regions including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Delhi. The play’s universal appeal has also seen it staged internationally in Israel, the UAE, Kuwait, Canada, and Qatar.

The upcoming schedule begins on May 8 at Jerimeri, where a performance will be held at the St Jude Balwadi Maidan starting at 7 pm. In a gesture of appreciation for the community's long-standing support, this show will be open to the public free of charge. Following this, a ticketed performance is scheduled for May 10 at the Pallotti Church ground in Marol, beginning at 7 pm. Tickets for the Marol show are currently available through local organisers.
The grand finale of this circuit will take place on May 26 at the Kuvempu Kala Mandir in Chikkamagaluru. Commencing at 4 pm, this 100th performance will serve as a “Celebration Show of the Century,” marking a historic moment for Francis Fernandes and the entire Konkani community.
Directed by the talented Joy Paladka, the drama features playwright Francis Fernandes in the lead role. The production is supported by a stellar cast including Betty Naz Bandra, Julie Vas Marol, Gregory Sequeira Niddodi, Peter Pais Basrur, Shanti Barboza Moodubelle, Flora D’Souza Kalmady, Lavina D’Souza Jerimeri, and Peter Cutinho.
These milestone performances have been made possible through the collaboration of various parish pastoral councils and dedicated individuals.
