Mangaluru: Pilikula zoo’s ‘cool care’ measures help animals beat the heat

Mangaluru, May 5: As soaring temperatures grip Karnataka, the scorching summer is proving harsh not just for people but for voiceless animals as well. At the renowned Pilikula Biological Park, authorities have stepped in with thoughtful and innovative measures to shield wildlife from the relentless heat, turning the zoo into a haven of comfort.

Located within the lush expanse of Dr Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama, the zoo is home to over 900 animals and birds. With temperatures steadily rising along the coast, these creatures began showing signs of heat stress. Recognising the urgency, zoo officials launched a comprehensive ‘summer treatment’ plan to ensure their well-being.

To combat the heat, enclosures are being cooled using overhead sprinkler systems that continuously spray water, significantly reducing surface temperatures. In areas where heat intensity is higher, fans and coolers have been installed to maintain a comfortable environment. Water pools have also been created across enclosures, allowing animals like tigers and leopards to immerse themselves and regulate their body temperature naturally.

According to zoo authorities, including commissioner Dr Arun Kumar N, special attention is being given to animals with thick fur. These animals are regularly sprayed with water through pipes to prevent overheating and keep them refreshed throughout the day.

Despite being situated within a forested area, which naturally offers a cooler microclimate compared to the city, the management has taken extra precautions to ensure that the animals’ natural habitats remain undisturbed while still providing relief from extreme weather conditions.

Spread across 82 hectares and recognised as a ‘major zoo,’ Pilikula Biological Park is also known for its successful wildlife breeding programmes. This summer, however, it stands out for something even more remarkable—its compassionate approach to animal care.

In a season where even humans struggle to stay cool, Pilikula’s animals are enjoying a touch of comfort that mirrors modern amenities. With sprinklers, shaded shelters, and water retreats, the zoo has truly redefined care, proving that kindness, when paired with innovation, can make even the hottest days feel a little cooler.
