Patna, May 5: Vishwa Varddhan’s journey to securing All India Rank (AIR) 101 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024 stands as a powerful example of determination, clarity of purpose, and the courage to change paths. The young achiever from Patna, Bihar, transitioned from a successful career in the Merchant Navy to the demanding world of civil services preparation.
Vishwa completed his schooling at Loyola High School, Patna, before pursuing graduation in Nautical Science from the Indian Maritime University. Following his studies, he joined the Merchant Navy and worked on a chemical tanker, gaining valuable professional experience. However, in 2019, he made a bold decision to resign from his job to dedicate himself fully to preparing for the UPSC examination.
Initially driven by the goal of achieving financial stability, Vishwa’s aspirations gradually evolved. He realized the potential of civil services as a platform to create a broader societal impact. This shift in mindset was further reinforced during the pandemic, when work disruptions provided him the time and perspective to commit wholeheartedly to his new goal.
Throughout his preparation, Vishwa actively participated in interview guidance programmes conducted by some renowned institutes. These platforms played a significant role in refining his approach, enhancing his confidence, and preparing him for the personality test stage.
His preparation strategy was rooted in simplicity and consistency. He emphasizes the importance of staying committed to one’s work and maintaining respect for diverse opinions, qualities that not only helped him in his preparation but also shaped his personality.
Vishwa’s technical background in maritime navigation added a unique dimension to his profile. During his mock interviews at one of the institutes, his knowledge of GPS alternatives and satellite communication stood out, highlighting how prior professional experience can be effectively integrated into UPSC preparation.
