Goa workers’ union marks May Day, demands wage hike and stronger labour protections

Daijiworld Media Network – Velsao

Velsao, May 1: The Goa United Workmen Union (GUWU) observed International Workers’ Day in Velsao on Thursday, expressing solidarity with workers and raising key demands aimed at strengthening labour rights.

The union urged the state government to strictly enforce existing labour laws and called for a 50 per cent increase in minimum wages, citing the rising cost of living. GUWU also opposed the implementation of the four new Labour Codes, alleging that they could dilute existing worker protections and impact job security and social welfare.

Activist Olencio Simoes highlighted concerns over illegal employment practices, claiming that the presence of undocumented foreign workers was affecting job opportunities for local youth.

The union further demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), intensified inspections, cancellation of licences of violators, and a 50 per cent job reservation for Goans in industries.
