Infosys rules out layoffs amid AI surge, to hire 20,000 freshers: CEO Salil Parekh

Bengaluru, Apr 30: Infosys will not resort to layoffs despite the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI), CEO and Managing Director Salil Parekh has said, underlining the company’s focus on hiring and reskilling to adapt to the evolving technology landscape.

“We have not done any layoffs in the last year and we don’t see anything of that sort coming up,” Parekh said in an interview, even as several IT firms undertake workforce restructuring amid increasing automation.

The Bengaluru-based IT major plans to continue large-scale campus hiring and is expected to onboard around 20,000 fresh graduates this year, similar to last year’s intake. Parekh noted that while AI may transform entry-level roles, it is unlikely to reduce overall demand for talent.

Describing AI as a structural shift in the industry, he said the technology is expanding the scope of work rather than shrinking it. Infosys, he added, is training engineers to work both with and without AI tools, enabling them to build, validate, and optimise code generated by advanced AI models.

The remarks come at a time when several major IT firms have announced job cuts as part of restructuring efforts. Reports have indicated that Tata Consultancy Services plans to reduce around 12,500 jobs in 2025, while companies such as HCLTech, Oracle, and Cognizant have also taken similar steps.

Parekh said AI currently contributes about 5.5 per cent to Infosys’ revenue and is growing rapidly, with the technology expected to emerge as a key driver of growth in the coming years.

To strengthen its AI capabilities, Infosys is expanding partnerships with firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic, while also deploying internal platforms like Topaz Fabric to scale AI-led development across projects.
