Yellow alert issued in DK, Udupi, other dists as IMD predicts rain and heatwave

Mangaluru, Apr 21: The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, as a combination of heavy thundershowers and heatwave conditions is expected to grip the state over the next few days.

For Tuesday, April 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast heavy rain across multiple districts, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. Despite the rain forecast, these three coastal districts are also under a heatwave alert, with citizens expected to face high temperatures alongside the showers.

Forecast for Wednesday and Thursday

The yellow alert will extend to 17 districts on Wednesday, April 22. Along with the coastal belt, districts such as Belagavi, Haveri, Hassan, Kodagu, and Chamarajanagar are expected to receive significant rainfall.

By Thursday, April 23, the focus of the thundershowers will remain on 10 districts, including:

  • Dakshina Kannada and Udupi

  • Uttara Kannada

  • Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru

  • Belagavi and Haveri

  • Hassan and Kodagu

Record temperatures across the state

Karnataka is currently experiencing a severe summer, with temperatures in several areas crossing the 40°C mark. In the latest recordings, Yadgiri topped the list at 42.9°C, followed closely by Kalaburagi at 42.5°C and Raichur at 41.05°C.

In the coastal and southern regions, temperatures remain high despite the rain alerts:

  • Dakshina Kannada: 35°C

  • Udupi: (Heatwave alert active)

  • Bengaluru city and rural: 36°C to 38°C

  • Mysuru and Davanagere: 36°C to 38°C

Bengaluru outlook

While inland Karnataka prepares for thundershowers until April 24, Bengaluru city is expected to have mainly clear skies for the next 48 hours. However, the city will experience high temperatures ranging from a minimum of 26°C to a maximum of 36°C, with chances of light, moderate rain in some areas.

The weather department has advised the public to take necessary precautions against both lightning during thundershowers and the intense heat during the day.
