Buenos Aires, Apr 6: India’s MMA icon Sangram Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win an MMA bout in Argentina, defeating French fighter Florian Coudier in a dominant performance at the Tigre Sports Club stadium in Buenos Aires.

The 16-years-older Indian fighter clinched victory in just one minute and 45 seconds, overwhelming his opponent with a strong display of wrestling techniques. With this win, Sangram also completed a hat-trick of international MMA victories, having earlier won bouts in Tbilisi, Georgia and Amsterdam, Netherlands.

A double Commonwealth heavyweight champion, Sangram credited his wrestling background for the win, saying it played a crucial role in countering his opponent’s speed and agility.

“Win or lose doesn’t matter to me. I either win or learn. Passion has no age. My dream of becoming the first Indian to win in Argentina has come true,” he said after the fight, also thanking the organisers and his long-time coach Bhupesh for their support.

The bout saw an intense start, with Florian attempting early kicks, while Sangram responded with counters. At a crucial moment, Sangram caught his opponent’s kick, executed a takedown using wrestling techniques, and secured a chokehold, forcing Florian to submit after repeated warnings from the referee.

Sangram revealed that he had undergone rigorous training ahead of the fight, maintaining strict discipline and competing in the 83 kg category. He also expressed surprise at the crowd support he received during the match.

This victory marks his third successive win in MMA, following earlier triumphs, including a 90-second win against a Pakistani opponent and another bout secured in the second round.
