Tehran, Mar 9: Iran has called on Muslim countries in the region to intervene and prevent further attacks by the United States and Israel on its energy infrastructure, warning that continued strikes could trigger similar retaliatory actions across the region.
Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari issued the warning after several fuel storage facilities in Tehran and the neighbouring Alborz Province were struck during overnight attacks carried out by the United States and Israel on Saturday. The strikes reportedly disrupted fuel supplies temporarily and raised concerns over potential environmental and public health risks.
According to reports cited by Iranian Students' News Agency, Zolfaghari accused Washington and Jerusalem of deliberately targeting Iran’s energy facilities and public service centres, claiming the attacks also caused civilian casualties. He urged Muslim countries in the region to warn both governments against what he described as “inhumane and cowardly actions,” arguing that such steps were necessary to stop the conflict from spreading further.
Zolfaghari cautioned that if the attacks continued, Iran could respond with comparable actions against energy assets elsewhere in the region. He also warned that such escalation could push global oil prices dramatically higher, suggesting the market could see prices rise above $200 per barrel if tensions worsen.
The statement comes amid heightened hostilities following joint airstrikes conducted by the United States and Israel on February 28 in Tehran and several other Iranian cities. The attacks reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with members of his family, senior military officials and civilians. In response, Iran launched multiple waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli territory and American military bases across the Middle East.
Earlier on Saturday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had carried out a retaliatory strike on an oil refinery in Haifa, Israel. In a statement released through its official outlet Sepah News, the IRGC said the facility was hit using Kheibarshekan missiles as a response to the earlier strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure.
Iran’s National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company also confirmed that several oil depots in Tehran and Alborz provinces were struck during the latest attacks. The facilities caught fire after being hit by missiles, but authorities said firefighting teams were working to bring the situation under control.
Residents in Tehran reported hearing a new series of powerful explosions late Saturday night, indicating that the capital had come under another wave of heavy attacks as the confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel continues to escalate.
