Media Release

Mangaluru, Feb 26: In a landmark moment for Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing, the college celebrated the successful “switch-on” of its first cochlear implant recipient on February 24 — marking the beginning of a transformative hearing journey for a young child. This device was heavily subsidised by the management of FMCI marking a true charitable nature of the institutions for the benefit of the poor and marginalised seeking health in its care.

The much-awaited switch-on ceremony was carried out by audiologists Susmitha C G and Pancham Ponnana S A, along with Sushmitha Upadhyay, audiologist from Cochlear Company. The event took place in the presence of the head of the department of ENT, Dr Vinay Rao, and ENT surgeon Dr Sana Aboobackar.

The “switch-on” is a crucial milestone in cochlear implantation, as it marks the first time the implanted device is activated, allowing the recipient to perceive sound. For the child and family, the moment symbolised hope, new beginnings, and the promise of improved communication and quality of life.

Following the activation ceremony, a celebration was organised to congratulate the child and family on embarking upon this life-changing journey. The gathering was graced by Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, director; Fr Michael Santhumayor, administrator; Dr Antony D’Souza, dean of FMMC; Prof Cynthia Santhmayor, principal of Father Muller College; Dr Sana Aboobackar; and other faculty members of Father Muller College.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Cynthia Santhmayor and the director highlighted the critical importance of consistent speech and language therapy, as well as structured auditory rehabilitation therapy, to ensure optimal outcomes following cochlear implantation. They emphasised that the switch-on marks only the beginning, and that sustained professional guidance, parental involvement, and therapeutic support will play a vital role in shaping the child’s hearing and speech development.

This milestone reflects the growing capabilities of FMMCH in delivering advanced ENT and audiological care. With this achievement, the institution strengthens its commitment to providing comprehensive hearing healthcare services to the community.

The successful switch-on not only celebrates medical advancement but also heralds a future filled with sound, speech, and opportunity for the young recipient.
