Udupi, Feb 16: Premalata Nayak, 82, wife of senior physician and prominent member of the Pangala Nayak family, Dr Seetharam Nayak, passed away on February 6 in the United States.
She is survived by her husband, two daughters, and a son.
Born to S N Gai Tonde and Sushila Gai Tonde in Mumbai, Premalata earned her MA in Economics from Bombay University. Following her marriage to Dr Seetharam Nayak in 1966, she moved to the US, where the couple settled permanently.

Residing in Charles Town, approximately 65 miles from Washington, Premalata was widely recognised for her keen interest in horticulture, Indian and international cultures, and the arts.
An avid connoisseur of classical music, she hosted luminaries including Gangubai Hangal, Bhimsen Joshi, Omkargulvadi, Devendra Murudeshwar, V G.Karnad, Appa Rao Jalgonkar, Nana Mule, Dr Ashok Tullule, and Dr Srinivasan. She also maintained close connections with the prominent Pai family of Manipal.
A family member recalled, “Premalata had a deep love for culture and tradition. She would always encourage learning, music, and the pursuit of knowledge in every gathering.” Remarkably, she passed away peacefully while her family was reciting the Gayathri Mantra and Vishnu Sahasranama, reflecting her lifelong devotion and spiritual discipline.
Her death marks the loss of a respected figure who seamlessly blended cultural sophistication, devotion, and family values, leaving an enduring legacy in both India and the US.
