Mangaluru, Feb 16: Catechism Day was celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm on February 15 at St Sebastian Church, Bendur. The day was a beautiful occasion of thanksgiving, appreciation, and joy for all catechism students, teachers, and parents.

The celebration began with a Thanksgiving Holy Mass. The main celebrant was Fr Vivek Pinto, In his homily, Fr Vivek emphasized the importance of faith formation from a young age. He encouraged the children to grow not only in academic knowledge but also in spiritual wisdom, obedience, and love for God. He reminded parents and teachers that catechism plays a vital role in shaping responsible and faith-filled Christians for the future.

After the Holy Mass, eucharistic adoration was conducted for the children by Fr Walter D’Souza. It was a serene and prayerful moment where the children spent time in silence before the Blessed Sacrament, thanking God for the gift of faith and seeking His guidance.

The stage programme began in the Centenary Hall. The dignitaries present on the dais were: Fr Walter D’Souza – vicar, Fr Vivek Pinto, Fr Ozmond D’Souza, chief guest Vincent Mendonca and Mable Mendonca, vice president Deepak D’Souza, secretary Royston Farias and catechism coordinator Mercine Pereira.

The programme commenced with a melodious prayer song by Sr Cynthia and team, invoking God’s blessings upon the gathering. Mercine Pereira catechism coordinator, warmly welcomed the dignitaries, teachers, parents, and students.

During the programme, prizes were distributed to students who secured above 85% in the catechism examination, those who achieved 100% attendance, and winners of various catechism-related competitions and activities conducted throughout the year. The achievements of the children were appreciated and applauded by all present.

In his address, Fr Walter D’Souza highlighted the importance of regular catechism classes and active participation in church life. He appreciated the dedication of the catechism teachers who selflessly invest their time and energy in forming the children in faith and values. He encouraged parents to collaborate closely with teachers to ensure the spiritual growth of their children.

All catechism teachers were honoured with special gifts as a token of appreciation for their tireless service and commitment. The gesture reflected the parish’s gratitude towards their invaluable contribution.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Anisha, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the parish priests, chief guest, parish council members, teachers, parents, and students for making the celebration meaningful and successful. The program was gracefully compered by Jyothsna D’Souza, who conducted the event with confidence and clarity.

The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal, where everyone shared moments of joy and togetherness.

Catechism Day 2026 at St Sebastian Church, Bendur, was truly a memorable and spiritually enriching occasion, strengthening the bond of faith within the parish community.
