Udupi, Feb 4: As a heartfelt tribute to those who have served and continue to serve the nation, the Udupi District Ex-Servicemen Forum, in association with Sainik Setu, organised a special free screening of the patriotic film ‘Border 2’, based on the 1971 Indo-Pak war, for ex-servicemen and their families. The screening was held on February 3 at 7 pm at Bharat Cinema, Mandavi Time Square Mall, Udupi.
Prior to the screening, an engaging interactive session was conducted during which retired defence personnel shared their experiences during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Addressing the gathering, ex-Naval officer Commodore Jerome Castellino highlighted the historical significance of the 1971 war, describing it as unique for three major reasons: the creation of Bangladesh within just 13 days, the first coordinated participation of all three wings of the Indian Armed Forces, and the surrender of nearly 93,000 enemy soldiers. He expressed hope that the film would inspire youngsters to join the defence forces and imbibe the spirit of patriotism.
Ex-Army officer Colonel Madhav Shanbhag recalled his decision to join the Army in 1971 in response to the nation’s call for young engineers. Sharing his wartime experiences, he paid homage to the nearly 3,000 soldiers who laid down their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh, emphasising that it was an honour to remember and respect these supreme sacrifices.
Ex-Air Force Sergeant Raghavendra Rao spoke about the disciplined planning and strategic execution of the war, noting that achieving the surrender of enemy forces within thirteen days was a remarkable military feat. He also urged the public to honour martyrs not only in words but through action—by visiting memorials such as the one at Ajjarkad and by practicing discipline in daily life.
The event was also attended by the president and committee members of the Indian Medical Association and the Indian Dental Association, reflecting strong community support for veterans.
The interactive session was conducted by Sudarshan R Pai and Pooja Pai from Sainik Setu. Ganapayya Shrigar, president of the Udupi Ex-Servicemen Forum, welcomed the war veterans. Ganesh Rao (CPO) coordinated the event, while Sub Major Ashok Kumar ensured the seamless execution of the programme at Bharat Cinemas.
The ex-servicemen team thanked Bharath Cinemas (Ashwin Prabhu, Mangaluru) and his team for providing the cinema facility at a concessional price to the ex-servicemen.
