Mangaluru marks 16th National Voters’ Day; district judge stresses ‘ballot more powerful than bullet

Mangaluru, Jan 28: The 16th National Voters’ Day was observed with zeal at Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall, Mangaluru, highlighting the crucial role of citizens in shaping a vibrant democracy. The event, jointly organized by the Dakshina Kannada district administration and the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), drew attention to the importance of active electoral participation.

Presiding over the programme, Raju K (KAS), additional deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, spoke about the administration’s efforts to ensure a transparent and inclusive electoral process.

The event was inaugurated by Basavaraj, principal district and sessions judge and chairperson of DLSA, who delivered a strong message to citizens: “The ballot is more powerful than the bullet.” He urged every eligible voter to exercise their fundamental right to vote, calling it the most effective instrument for social and political change. Following this, Baibunnisa, senior civil judge and member secretary of DLSA, administered the Voters’ Pledge, reinforcing ethical and responsible voting among attendees.

Adding to the awareness drive, additional superintendent of police Anil Kumar S Bhoomareddy lauded the dedication of officials working tirelessly in even the most remote areas to educate the public on the significance of voting. He encouraged citizens to not only cast their vote but also act as ambassadors of democracy by guiding others on the importance of the franchise.

The programme was attended by several dignitaries, including DDPI Shashidhar, DDPU Rajeshwari, and tahsildar Ramesh Babu. As part of the celebrations, voter ID cards were distributed to students who recently turned 18, marking their entry into the democratic process.

The event also recognized exemplary service during elections, honouring Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for their dedication. Vasudeva Shetty, BLO of 203 Mangaluru City South assembly constituency, received accolades for his contribution. Additionally, winners of a student essay competition were felicitated, further encouraging youth participation in the democratic process.

The celebrations reinforced the message that active participation in elections remains the cornerstone of a strong and inclusive democracy in India.
