Karkala, Jan 22: A leopard died after falling into a well at Bola village in Karkala taluk. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night, and the animal was found dead in a well located in the plantation belonging to Malaker Kadman Narayan Shettar.
The deceased leopard was identified as a male, approximately three years old. The incident came to light on Wednesday January 21 when family members went to the well to draw water and noticed the dead leopard. They immediately informed social worker Suprith Shetty Kedinje, who in turn alerted forest department officials.

Forest officials, including forest officer Hukrappagowda and staff, rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. According to preliminary sources, the leopard may have fallen into the well while chasing a dog. Based on the condition of the carcass, the forest department stated that the leopard might have fallen into the well and died two to three days earlier.
Several houses are located in the surrounding area, and leopard-related problems have increased in recent days. Despite villagers’ concerns and the installation of cages on several occasions, no leopard had been trapped so far.
A team led by forest officer Hukrappagowda and other forest officials lifted the leopard’s body from the well and conducted a post-mortem examination under the supervision of veterinary doctors. The final rites were later carried out as per norms.
