Mumbai, Jan 15: Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has candidly admitted that he has seen a significant decline in work opportunities in Bollywood over the past eight years, suggesting that non-creative forces and possible communal biases may be at play within the industry.
Speaking in a recent interview, Rahman said that he has consciously distanced himself from certain sections of the Hindi film industry, adding that the ecosystem has changed. “Maybe it’s a communal thing. Maybe people who are not creative have the power now,” he remarked, indicating that decision-making in Bollywood is no longer driven purely by artistic merit.

The legendary composer, who has delivered some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic soundtracks, noted that he prefers to focus on meaningful projects rather than chase work. He said he continues to stay creatively fulfilled through international collaborations, regional cinema and independent music ventures.
Rahman also pointed out that the industry’s priorities have shifted over the years, with commercial considerations often overshadowing originality and experimentation. Despite fewer Bollywood assignments, he stressed that he has no regrets and remains committed to music that aligns with his values and creative vision.
The composer’s remarks have sparked discussion within film circles, with many acknowledging his contribution to Indian cinema and questioning the changing dynamics of power and creativity in Bollywood.
AR Rahman continues to be active across global platforms and Indian regional industries, reinforcing his stature as one of the most influential and respected musicians of his generation.
