Dubai, Jan 13: The Gulf has always been a land of dreams for millions from coastal Karnataka, but only a few turn those dreams into enduring legacies. One such name that stands tall in the UAE hospitality sector is Praveen Shetty, the man behind the rapidly growing Fortune Hotels Group.
His life journey — from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most respected Kannadiga entrepreneurs in the Gulf — is a true story of patience, integrity, faith and social responsibility.
Through Daijiworld TV’s inspiring talk show Gulf Talkies, Praveen Shetty opens up about his remarkable three-decade journey, his philosophy of life and business, and the deep emotional bond he shares with his homeland.
A humble beginning
Praveen Shetty arrived in Dubai over 35 years ago as a simple jobseeker, doing night shifts to support his young family. With no godfathers and only determination as capital, he began learning the hospitality business from the grassroots level — working in kitchens, service areas and operations — absorbing every aspect of the trade.
In 2000, he opened his first hotel on Rega Road, branding it Fortune.
Fortune quickly became a favoured spot for Indian delegations visiting Dubai. The then Karnataka chief minister and prominent media figures chose his hotel during official trips, providing the brand with early recognition throughout Karnataka.
Expansion and growth
Shetty gradually broadened his hospitality ventures, establishing hotels in Fujairah, Dubai and other Emirates. By 2017, he had developed his own property and continued to grow the Fortune brand with new hotels.
Just before the pandemic, he ventured overseas, opening Fortune Palace in Georgia (Tbilisi), underscoring his expanding international presence.
However, Covid-19 put him through trials he could never have anticipated.
Covid-19: A test of faith and humanity
In September 2020, Praveen Shetty and his entire family fell ill with Covid-19. He fought for his life in the ICU for twelve days. What followed became one of the most uplifting periods of his life.
While businesses were failing and fear gripped the globe, Shetty prioritised compassion over profit. He arranged private charter flights to help stranded Kannadigas — particularly pregnant women, children and critically ill patients — return to Mangaluru safely. Many were flown home free of cost or at significantly reduced fares.
His hotels became havens for those in need. He provided free lodging, meals and medical assistance to many individuals. He now attributes his recovery and the resurgence of his business after Covid-19 to the goodwill he extended to others.
Within two years of the pandemic, he successfully rebuilt his business empire, which now includes six hotels and a residential property across the UAE.
A man of principles
Despite his achievements, Praveen Shetty remains humble. He steers clear of politics and speculative ventures, firmly believing in ethical business practices and strict compliance with UAE laws, which he considers among the world’s most entrepreneur-friendly legal frameworks.
He believes true success lies in good health, a strong family, social responsibility and personal contentment, rather than public recognition.
He is known to quietly assist those in need, including patients, widows, students and families in Karnataka, without seeking attention.
Giving back to the homeland
Shetty has returned to his roots by investing in his hometown. In Brahmavar, he has developed Fortune Village, a resort with twenty rooms, along with a wedding hall and commercial shops, providing employment opportunities in the area.
He is also exploring expansion along the coastal highway, adding hospitality ventures that will boost tourism and generate local employment.
A message for young people
His message to the younger generation is simple yet powerful: do not chase easy money. Master your craft. Build experience. Take time, but keep moving forward, step by step.
He emphasises the importance of young people, especially those in technical fields, honing their skills before venturing into entrepreneurship and cautions against unnecessary risks.
A genuine inspiration
Praveen Shetty's journey, from a night-shift employee to a prominent business figure in the Gulf, illustrates that success isn't instantaneous. It's achieved through perseverance, integrity, empathy, and belief.
